Citizens urge passage of city zoning law on East State St

Citizens led by Dwight Rutherford pressed City Council to pass zoning laws to block a proposed frozen food locker plant on East State St. Fifteen property owners argued for orderly zoning while Council signaled limited relief and formed a committee to seek engineering firms and cost estimates. Mayor’s Court fines fell in August, with total $1,624 vs $2,450 in July, mainly due to fewer intoxication and speeding cases. Rent Control Office Busy On First Day in Athens County

The Athens County Rent Control office opened at 8:30 a.m. and stayed busy until 4:30 p.m. registering about 125 landlords and their properties. Fred E. Schroeder, the area rent inspector, said registration runs through Oct. 15 under the federal program effective Sept. 1, rolling rents back to Jan. 1, 1946 levels. He praised landlords as understanding and cooperative and noted a ruling on rent adjustments: if a Jan. 1 raise occurred but payment date is Jan. 2, the rent charged should be the December 1945 amount, not the higher January rate.
