British forces conduct aerial leaflet drops over German cities as war broadens across Europe. The Athenia torpedoed and sunk, 1400 aboard with 313 Americans, near Ireland. Berlin disputes sinking claim while France and Britain escalate actions. Japan neutrality stated. German offensive against Poland advances.
In London Sir John Anderson said all Germans and Austrians in Britain will face immediate review by civil defense to reduce risks. In Newark eleven people were injured when a Greyhound bus crashed into a brick building after swerving to avoid a collision. In Brussels King Leopold took personal command as Belgium placed troops in defense and frontier ready.
The Messenger prints a Labor Day issue amid fast moving European war events including torpedoing of a British merchant ship and impact on Americans returning home. Roosevelt address and front-line updates appear with reduced staff. pages 4 5 and 8 carry war news and editorials.
The Queen Mary, flagship of Britain’s merchant fleet, docked in New York after a tense Atlantic crossing. She carried 2,331 passengers and 44 million dollars in gold, with many travelers sleeping on cots in public rooms.
Ambassador Kennedy reports all aboard the British liner Athenia saved except those killed by the explosion. The ship torpedoed about 200 miles from land during the first day of hostilities. Captain Cook said survivors were picked up by rescue ships near Scotland and Ireland. hundreds of Americans and Canadians aboard.
President Roosevelt warns that a European war endangers humanity and urges America to stay neutral in thought and action. He highlights the need for accurate news, cautions against profiteering, and calls for national unity to prevent conflict from reaching the Americas.
