University studies rail safety near campus houses

A special report on hazards from the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad near Ohio University campus is due by October 31. Provost Robert Savage leads the task force with VP Martin Hecht and Richard C. Dorf to propose immediate safety measures including a fenced playground and chain link fencing at the Mill Street married student housing complex. The project costs about 25,000 dollars and the university would bear most expenses. The railroad is not legally involved but may assist. A full safety plan covering all university property along the tracks is planned, with relocation deemed too costly.
