Ohio ends Labor Day weekend with 23 highway deaths plus drownings and other fatalities. Notable crashes include a three dead head on collision near Dayton and an auto train crash in Sandusky. Brenda Leatherman, 24, drowned at Mohican State Park after wandering off. 1500 volunteers searched the area.

C W Hoback of Portland filed suit in Meigs County Common Pleas Court challenging the $374000 Southern Local School District bond issue approved by voters 723 to 680 at a July 8 special election. He says district valuation is $5300000 and the debt would exceed 4 percent of value and that taxation department permission was not obtained before submitting bonds to voters. He seeks an injunction stopping bond sale.
Sixty five persons were killed in accidents during Canada's three day Labor Day weekend. The traffic toll this year was 44 compared with 44 last year and an overall toll of 8 percent.
Forty seven marginal congressional districts across 15 Midwest and Western states loom large for party strategists seeking House control. Republicans won 26 near in 1956 and Democrats 21 with under five percent margins. Akron police say 16 year old Richard Lee Martin was killed by a patrolman during an attempted escape after arrest. The officer reported surprising the youths while they tried to break into the rear of a storefront auto store with a 15 year old companion.
President Adolfo Ruiz Cortines vows firm action against further student disorders and illegal strikes in Mexico. In Mexico City students who stole or burned nearly 200 buses over a fare dispute decide to return 12 more stolen vehicles as a gesture of good intentions.
Hurricane Ella moved through central Cuba with winds near 60 mph forecasts for the Florida Straits. The storm extends 150 miles north and 50 miles south with flash floods expected in the island’s central and western regions. Gale warnings stretch from Palm Beach to the Florida Keys and Straits as Ella tracks west of Camaguey and southeast of Key West.
Merrill D. Brothers, Democratic nominee, asks Ohio Attorney General to collect $6000 in sales tax on tickets to 11 campaign picnics for C. William ONeill reelection. If tickets were purchases at $2 each the state could claim 6 cents per ticket. if given away, possible Corrupt Practices Act violation.
George Lynn Offutt, 22, of Minersville Route 1, pleaded guilty in Meigs County Common Pleas Court to second degree murder in the death of his wife Donna Jean Offutt, 21. He received a life sentence and will be moved to the Ohio Penitentiary within five days.
In Formosa Strait the Chinese Nationalists say their warships sank 11 Communist torpedo boats and possibly a 12th while breaking a convoy to Quemoy Island. They also claim three Communist gunboats and eight junks were sunk near Amoy. Despite these Naval gains, a troop carrier aborted unloading 370 reinforcements, with only 30 reaching shore.
