Fishing Ban Sparks Hand to Hand Clash Off Iceland

British fishermen and Icelandic coast guardsmen fought aboard a trawler in the no fishing zone off Iceland’s east coast. The Icelandic gunboat crew reportedly tried to seize the Northern Foam as the Eastbourne moved in to remove the guards. This marked the first violent contact in the two day old dispute.

Bond Issue Contested in Meigs County Court action

C W Hoback of Portland filed suit in Meigs County Common Pleas Court challenging the $374000 Southern Local School District bond issue approved by voters 723 to 680 at a July 8 special election. He says district valuation is $5300000 and the debt would exceed 4 percent of value and that taxation department permission was not obtained before submitting bonds to voters. He seeks an injunction stopping bond sale.

Man given life for second degree murder in Meigs County

George Lynn Offutt, 22, of Minersville Route 1, pleaded guilty in Meigs County Common Pleas Court to second degree murder in the death of his wife Donna Jean Offutt, 21. He received a life sentence and will be moved to the Ohio Penitentiary within five days.

Air Transport Plane Crashes Near Guam

A Military Air Transport Service plane with 19 aboard crashed in the Pacific shortly after leaving Guam. Debris and three bodies were recovered about 30 miles west of Guam. a Navy ship found two more, and an Air Force helicopter located one.
