First Home Built There Recalled by Hocking Valley History
The Dailey cabin at the mouth of Federal Creek near Athens is identified as the first home in what is now Athens County. David Dailey, a Revolutionary War veteran, and his family settled there around 1797, later moving to Carthage Township. His clashes with Governor Arthur St. Clair became legendary in local lore, and the area saw early development including a schoolhouse near the Dailey site and a 1811 seagoing ship built nearby. Dbays and Ebenezer Buckingham are buried in Cooley Cemetery in Carthage Township.
