Army Test Balloon Falls In Woods Near Athens
An Army test balloon dropped into trees on Scatter Ridge near Athens after drifting from the Hocking Valley. Residents reported sighting it about 6:30 am as it crossed Route 50 near Canaanville and headed toward Bepre or Parkersburg. Patrols traced it to a wooded Route 650 area. no instruments or main parachute were found.

Three Wrecks Reported by Athens Police Weekend
Athens police and Meigs County Sheriff Charles Russell joined to arrest Elsworth W. Edwards 77 of Hogsett West Virginia for leaving the scene after his pickup struck George Pocisk’s car on President Street near the South Bridge. Edwards pled guilty in Mayor Mickle’s court and paid 15 dollars plus costs. A second Pocisk vehicle had been struck previously while parked on West Union Street. A third collision occurred on Raymond Drive injuring none. Mathewson and Pratt drivers reported minor damage and no injuries.

Clarence Cline and Bill Tewksbury, both of Albany, earned blue ribbons in the Future Farmers Potato Show at the Ohio State Fair. Cline took a Chippewa class potato, while Tewksbury won with a Katahdin and also showed the grand champion potato exhibit.

Columbus Resident Pleads Guilty In Alcohol DUI Case
A Columbus man, Harry Tubbs, pled guilty to operating a motor vehicle under the influence. He was fined 125 dollars plus costs and sentenced to five days in the city jail in Mayor Mickle's court. The case followed an Aug. 19 hearing with city police testimony. Thomas Land, 29, of Middleport, was fined five dollars and costs for failing to obey a traffic signal. costs were suspended. A special meeting of Paramathia Lodge No. 25 is listed for Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Masonic Temple with a Master Mason’s degree to be conferred per Enis South.

William Osterholt, an Athens based Air Force recruiter guiding the Athens and Army Recruiting Station area, is promoted from technical sergeant to master sergeant after 17 years in the Army and service with the Air Force since 1946.
