The U N warned partition of the Holy Land could ignite regional conflict as Arabs reject UN plans to divide Palestine and admit Jewish immigration. President Truman outlined four point foreign policy and pledged U S adherence to the UN charter while prepared to defend Western Hemisphere unity under a regional defense pact.
Universal military training endorsement came from the 37th Division Veterans Association at its 29th annual reunion in Columbus. The group urged awarding a third battle star for the division’s Pacific World War II service and authorized its executive committee to pick a 1948 reunion city. Officers named include Richard McCloskey of Toledo president and Harold Hagberg of Cleveland chaplain.

Gayles allegedly kidnapped carjackings and attacked Edna Adkins Paul Adkins Edgar Rizzo and others in multiple incidents. Police seek charges of cutting to kill armed robbery auto theft and related offenses.
In Rueil France 87 people burned to death in a movie theater fire were buried after a communal funeral. About 20 000 mourners filled streets as 13 coffin trucks carried the coffins to the cemetery following the service.
Baltimore announces a new installment plan for rail travel to be launched Monday in about 50 cities on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The loan can be repaid over 12 months and may cover tours hotel bills clothing and equipment for vacations. J. F. Whittington, general passenger traffic manager, said the plan has been adopted by about 50 major railroads nationwide.
In Barrow in Furness England five children of Mr and Mrs Samuel Holroyd were found ill in a field last night. Three died and two were in critical condition. The British Press Association reports they may have eaten poison weed called dead weem resembling a potato.

An arbitration board awarded a wage increase of 15 1 2 cents an hour to nearly 1,000,000 non operating railroad workers, effective yesterday. The raise, accepted after unions and carriers agreed, marks the third such award in a little over a year, following 18 1 2 cents in 1946.

About 18 000 pottery workers in plants nationwide will gain six cents an hour starting Sept 15 under a new contract negotiated over Labor Day by the United States Potters Association and the AFL National Brotherhood of Operative Potters. Union President James M. Duffy said the raise is in addition to an earlier eight and one half cent increase agreed in January, though the pact runs until Oct 1, 1948.
