Athens County election board clash over precinct official appointments

In Athens County the battle over scheduling a meeting of the county election board flared into a partisan contest as Republicans and Democrats argued whether the session should be Monday or Tuesday. The dispute centers on naming 438 precinct officials, six per precinct, with pay of 8 dollars for election day work and 10 dollars for presiding judges. The board consists of Republicans David Johnson and Earl Johnson and Democrats Dan Bardin and Frank Poston, with C. L. Jordan as secretary. A meeting was called to proceed with appointments, but partisan absences and procedural questions delayed action. Republicans claim the appointments should follow central committee recommendations, while Democrats resist. The situation drew local commentary about political influence and election administration.
