Chicago reports a unified AFL response to the Daugherty injunction limiting railway strike activities. Leaders insist on lawful picketing and continued work stoppages while seeking constitutional protection, with Samuel Gompers urging a possible general strike as federal courts prepare to rule.
Washington reports inflamed labor leaders plan a possible general strike in response to the Daugherty injunction. AFL leaders meet in a week to decide whether to recommend action as White House hints at stronger measures to preserve transportation.
US Justice Department has sent secret operatives to the Herrin area after Otis Clark’s indictment for murder in the June massacre that killed 22 men. Grand jury possibly to return more indictments as agents tighten surveillance to prevent escapes.
United States marshals armed with a restraining order moved from the federal building to enforce the injunction sought by Attorney General Daugherty. The first shake of the day came when B. M. Jewell, head of the railway department of the AF of L, could not be found and was said to have boarded a train eastward during the night.
Morning reports from Philadelphia indicate a peace by night settlement in the coal miners strike. A joint operators and miners conference will set terms, with the old wage scale to continue to September 1923 as a midway point between demands and contracts. In Cleveland a violent clash left Matthew Strazier dead and Peter Schweisthal dying after three alleged strikers fired on him.
No meeting Monday due to Labor Day. Regular September session set for Monday September 11 at 2:30 PM in the Chamber of Commerce.

Washington Sept 2 The adjusted compensation bill granting billions to World War veterans will go to the White House for presidential action early next week. Bonus supporters and opponents claim White House backing as conferees move to finish tariff and bonus. The report will go to Congress by Tuesday and to the White House by Thursday unless delays arise.
The Lodi township announces schools will open Tuesday September 5, the day after Labor Day.
Dogs killed 260 sheep and 33 injured in the year ending June 30, 1922. Total allowances for damages and witness fees 1 632 90. Fund balance July 1 1922: 14 147 81 with dog and kennel fund 9 031 81 and total collections 5 116. Amounts paid 1 565 for damages and 367 90 for witness fees. Final cash on hand 12 209 19.
Heavy rainfall drenched the national capital in the early hours delaying transport. The storm began at 2 am and by 9 am a record rainfall was recorded at the weather bureau. Streetcars were blocked cellars flooded and sewers overflowed.
Friday night’s windstorm left wires into the city and across the lower Ohio valley in trouble. The Messenger’s leased wire to the north was badly crippled, curtailing the report of the outage.
At Glen Ebon crossing near Nelsonville two cars collided Friday around 4 30 pm injuring seven people, with 25 passengers on the northbound Hocking and Sunbury Creek Traction car. Damages to the street car are estimated at 5000 dollars.
Senator Cummins warns that twenty percent of railroad equipment has deteriorated since the strike began and six months may pass before full transport capacity returns even if shops reopen. Reed rebukes the bill as misused power while urging targeted coal crisis solutions.
