Charter supporters ask Ohio Supreme Court to overturn ruling
Supporters of proposed county charters in Athens Meigs and Portage Counties ask the Ohio Supreme Court to overturn or clarify last year’s ruling that pre election review of charters is improper. They allege boards and the Secretary of State exceeded authority by examining charter substance. The petitions seek ballot placement for the November election and frame pre election review as a First Amendment political speech issue and local self government right. The charters would bar water use for fracking and ban fracking waste disposal. Portage would also bar new oil and gas exploration and related equipment.
