Heat and drought swept Athens District as temperatures neared 100 degrees for the third straight day. An eclipse briefly cooled mercury by seven degrees, but readings peaked near 99. Ohio reports four heat deaths and numerous heat illnesses at the State Fair as temps likely remain near 100.
Athens County politics flare as Preston E Thompson of Chauncey files a petition with about 1400 signatures to run for prosecuting attorney. The county board will decide Sept 14 if his name goes on the ballot, with fierce sheriff and commissioner contests anticipated among Democrats and Republicans.
Bowling Green Ohio September 1 U P Farm strike in Northwestern Ohio to lift farm product prices to a profitable level will be proposed at a meeting of farmers in City Park. Milo Reno national president will speak A E Lane of Bowling Green will chair. Speakers include Mr and Mrs Self Union Hill and J J Crecelius Milan Erie County. Over 200 farmers from nine counties attended a leaders meeting last Sunday.
Tallant Tubbs, 35, state senator and anti prohibitionist, won the Republican nomination to oppose Democrat William Gibbs McAdoo for the Senate seat held by Samuel M. Shortridge. Tubbs based his bid on repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment and defeated Shortridge, who has 12 years in the Senate.

Clifford Lines McGill of Nelsonville pleads not guilty to assault and battery before Magister Porter and is bound over to Athens County Common Pleas Court under a $300 bond. A yearling Mering ram from Donald Bowman Bartlett Ohio, owned by a deceased youth, won first prize in the 431 Club sheep show at the Ohio State Fair. Bowman’s last wish was for his sheep to be entered despite a rule requiring the raiser’s presence. Judge L A Kauffman praised the ram as a fine specimen.
Thormas Baccana a 40 year old restaurant owner was shot and killed at a veterans picnic by the Whetstone River. Authorities say Bascas fought earlier and a tooth was found in his hand. A suspect was arrested in Toledo at 2 am and will be questioned by Sheriff Fye.
John A. Machray the bursar of the University of Manitoba and chancellor for the Church of England in Western Canada is under arrest in Winnipeg charged with theft of 347000 of the university funds. An investigation continues into a reported church fund shortage of 1250900 entrusted to him.
Following several days of clashes in Athera County mining country, dynamite blasts damaged two vacated Manhattan Coal Company houses on Mound Street Chauncey. Mrs Minnie Palmer was struck in the right foot and 600 residents gathered to view the ruins as sniping continued near Mine No 2 and the Saint Church area. National Guard patrols and guards at the tipple fired back at shooters. shots appeared to come from the streetcar line area.
At 6 20 yesterday afternoon snipers fired from Mamley Run hill at Homer Bell and his vehicle on the way home from Mine 25. At 9 80 there was another report of gunfire at Lick Run Mine of the Manhattan Company from the ridge road. Two shots were fired at guards who returned fire. No casualties. After the Chauncey demonstration two men were arrested by National Guard observers on suspicion. one was released after examination. William Champlin of Chauncey faces a carrying concealed weapons charge. Children of Rye Cunningham in Chauncey found a half stick of dynamite in their yard. no fuse or cap was present. Cunningham works at Mine 25.
Governor White with state officials was honored as King of the Ohio State Fair for the day. An estimated 85,000 attended and nearly 200 sought Red Cross First Aid due to heat. Thursday features the governor's stake race worth 2000 and the Washington Lives pageant at 8 15 p m.
Red Marking and Jay 8Sich of Glouster posted $1,000 bonds after being found not guilty in County Common Pleas Court before Judge O F Rowland. They faced charges of stealing a 12 gauge shotgun from Bess Baker in Glouster on June 10.
