In Algiers a right wing French settler group detonated more than 60 plastic bombs in one night. Two Algerians died and 16 were injured as crowds cheered from European balconies. Earlier a French police commissioner, Louis Pelissier, was killed by gunfire.
Washington denounces the Soviet Union large nuclear burst as an attempt to induce fear. Fallout is expected to reach North America in three to five days. The White House says the test does not alter the nuclear balance and pledges US power to defend freedom. No word on resuming atmospheric tests.
