Convicts at Menard State Prison end a four day uprising and release seven hostages. Gov. Adlai Stevenson prepared to personally appeal to the inmates to seek an end to the crisis.
AP reports Adlai Stevenson, nominee for the White House, left the campaign to address a prison riot in Pennsylvania. Sen. William Fulbright stood in as stand in during Stevenson’s absence as the riot at Menard Prison entered its fifth day. Stevenson aimed to rejoin in time for New York appearances amid hostage negotiations and a stalled standoff.
President Truman accuses Gen Dwight D Eisenhower of reckless cynical election tactics by dividing the nation over Korea. He says Eisenhower helped shape foreign policy he now denounces and mocks his quotes as misused. Truman tours Ohio en route to Cincinnati with support for DiSalle Lausche and the Democratic ticket.

A 20 foot steel girder crashed through the roof of a seven story office building, killing John H. Flohr Jr., 3, of Philadelphia, and panicking about 40 other workers. The girder fell from the 18th floor of a nearby hotel as Flohr sat at his desk.
