Athens greets 3000 teachers and administrators from 11 counties for the 46th Southeastern Ohio Education Association session. Opening events include dinners, general sessions at Memorial Auditorium, and sectional meetings with speakers Dr William James Durant and Dr Albert Edward Wiggam.
Dr. Durant will speak at the general session of the SOEA in Memorial Auditorium Friday morning. Dr. Wiggam will address the schoolmen's dinner tonight and the first general session of the teachers to follow in Memorial Auditorium. Dr. Gaw of Ohio State University will speak at the schoolwomen's dinner in Hotel Berry tonight.
Miss Mary Elizabeth Arnold a 27 year old stenographer of Belpre was notified her selective service registration number 1944 is 101st in order of call in her district She said she is ready to serve with a rifle or a typewriter and will complete the required questionnaire The local draft board can only act if she is called for active duty
The Justice Department ordered the deportation of Mrs Raissa Berkman Browder wife of Earl Browder general secretary of the Communist Party in the United States for illegal entry. Immigration officials said she 43 would have a reasonable time to report for deportation to Russia. The Browders married in Moscow in September 1926 and have three sons two born in Moscow and one in New York in 1934. They reside in Yonkers New York.
The Waco Aircraft Co. at capacity production for army training planes suffered a fire caused by oil rag combustion in a paint room. Firemen reported no sabotage. Many plane parts were lost, but production was expected to resume in about half a day.
Mrs. Fairy Gingery of Columbus was named grand worthy matron of the Ohio Grand Chapter during the annual state convention of the Order of the Eastern Star held in Cleveland yesterday.
The War Department plans 12 000 additional bombing aircraft built largely with auto industry aid. The program, possibly costing 2 billion dollars, is separate from the 12 000 warplane order Britain proposes to place in the United States. Knudsen and auto leaders discussed building two large plant complexes to assemble parts made in auto factories. Government operation is under consideration among officials.
Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr reports at a Cleveland Town Hall that German plans to attack the United States through Mexico are confirmed. He warned that Hitler’s air war could reach the U S through Mexico within two weeks if England falls.
Columbus report states a new formula will compute benefits on a recipient’s highest quarterly earnings effective Nov 1. Administrator H C Atkinson of the Ohio Bureau of Unemployment Compensation announced the change, which will raise the average weekly benefit from 10.39 dollars to about 11.50 dollars.
A 30 year old man, Walter S Holzapfel, died when a shotgun discharged while being cleaned last night in Greenville. The incident is under investigation by local authorities.
Washington moves to begin selective service after navy requests. The War Department targets 800 000 trainees for a year of service starting next June. Volunteers prioritized, with a larger December call planned. Lottery master list needed for questionnaires to Class 1A men. Each man has five days to return his form before induction.
Roosevelt asserts U S boys won t be sent to foreign war while Willkie warns of war by April 1941 if Roosevelt is re elected. They spoke in Boston and Baltimore amid defense and agriculture talks. Roosevelt announced Britain requested 12000 more planes and would get sympathetic consideration.
Wendell Willkie told a Wilmington Del crowd that a British demand for 12 000 planes would be insignificant if he wins. He said production would rise to a high level and that he and American industry could do more than Roosevelt to bring peace and avoid stagnation. He criticized Roosevelt’s radio speech and urged backing for his leadership.
Beidler 17 died when hit by a car during a Halloween prank in Lorain. Deputy Chester Cordy said five youths lay in the highway to stop motorists, and Beidler was among them.
Dr Albert S Stenler, a prominent Washington Court House physician, died yesterday in a Cleveland hospital. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Public notice states bids will be received until November 15 for a 3.5 mile relocation on US Route 50 in Carthage and Travs Town, with an estimated cost of 393600 dollars funded by federal aid. A public hearing is set for November 19 at 10:30 a.m. before the Athens County commissioners on the proposed location change.

CIO United Automobile Workers authorized a strike at White Motor Co in Cleveland if no satisfactory renewal is reached. Richard E. Reisinger said the vote was 2 003 to 149. The union seeks higher wages, two weeks vacation with pay, and a union shop amid the plant’s millions in military orders.
Jack Stepnicka and Joseph Moore were wounded when an assailant fired two shots through a street car window during a stop at the end of the line in Cleveland. The motorman and conductor, aged 34 and 45, were reading when struck.
