The Republican Publicity Association declares Gompers threatens labor autonomy and warns that collective bargaining would force employers to the labor union's terms. It argues the closed shop would control hiring, risk strikes, and threaten life liberty and pursuit of happiness under a union dominated regime.
The nationwide bituminous coal strike begins at midnight despite a temporary restraining order issued by Judge A B Anderson. John L Lewis denounces the order as expansion of wartime powers. The order bans strike action and related activities by United Mine Workers officials with Nov 8 set for a hearing.
Washington October 31 troops moved to strategic coal areas as government seeks injunctions against union leaders under the Lever Act to prevent a nationwide 12:01 a m walkout by more than 490000 miners President Wilson planned an executive order restoring coal price levels and fuel administration powers to ensure public protection and distribution of scarce coal supplies authorities said Pershing was in Washington to advise Congress on military matters.
