University Theater opens playshop with two one act plays

The University Theater in Ewing Auditorium presents two one act plays on Tuesday evening October 31 at 7 30. Trifles directed by Christopher Lane and Hands Across the Sea directed by Charles B Watts come from the dramatic arts department. Ohio University School of Music provides a program featuring Barbara Bogart Barbara Ramsey Joy Patterson and Henrietta Mehlman. The Wednesday Club meets with Mrs Thomas Smith of Albany on Wednesday November 1.

Ohio Packing Co Expands as It Hires 150 Workers

The Ohio Packing Co. began in the former Stedman Co. plant on West State Street last March and now employs 150 people with a payroll exceeding $300,000 annually. Manager Jack S. Sabel plans expansion within two months to push payroll over $500,000. The firm ships all products overseas to Army kitchens, supplying fresh beef and processed cuts, with six cars of beef boned daily for roasts steaks and other uses sent to embarkation points.

Ohio Packing Co beef sent to overseas troops delights local man

Pfc. Frank W. Young of New Marshfield reports receiving frozen beef from the Ohio Packing Co Athens Ohio. The plant, backed by Athens County Industrial Association, has been restored with modern refrigeration and equipment. It aims to supply 60 percent of carcasses for overseas forces and expand after the war, employing 35 boners and planning further upgrades.

Urge Women To Report For Red Cross Duties

The Athens County Red Cross calls surgical dressing workers to report at headquarters to finish the current dressings quota. Miss Ellen Biddle cites lagging units and nonparticipants. Since the program began 555,000 dressings have been completed, eight cartons totaling 45,000 dressings shipped last week. Five cartons held 4 by 8 dressings and three held 4 by 4s. Currently material exists for 52,000 bandages with 30,000 two by two dressings newly received.

Willie Frank Dies at Nelsonville on Saturday

Willie J. Frank age 67 died suddenly Saturday afternoon in Nelsonville of a heart attack. He leaves a son Nihle Frank of Fort Worth Texas and three daughters Mrs Forrest Martin Athens Route 4 Mrs Ethel Allen Athens Route 1 and Miss Mabelmae Frank Washington DC. Funeral services will be held at Stout Funeral Home Nelsonville Tuesday at 1 PM with burial at Chester. The casket will be opened at the cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home anytime.

Victim Dies After Route 216 Auto Crash Near New Straitsville

Sheridan Woodruff aged about 60 of New Straitsville died in Lancaster Hospital after being struck by an automobile on Route 216 just outside New Straitsville. Newark driver Paul Cupp did not see him until close aboard. Eyewitnesses and police report no reckless driving. Woodruff, employed at a local restaurant, is survived by two sons.

Five Arrested By Patrolmen

Five individuals faced charges after police stops and incidents on routes 7 33 and 13. Arthur S Largent of New Plymouth pleaded guilty to DUI with a 50 fine and 30 day license suspension. Roger E Van Dyke a 20 year old soldier of 29 Race St pleaded guilty to unsafe operation and paid five dollars. Harry Ohlinger 52 of Pome roy was fined five dollars for unsafe operation. An Athens boy had his driving rights suspended for a year after speeding on Route 33 before Juvenile Judge Francis White. William Scott 50 of Rendville and Arthur Harris Jr 15 of Corning collided on Route 13. Harris to face juvenile court in New Lexington.

Deadline Set for ASTRP Applications in Fifth Service

War Department policy changes require all U S Army recruiting stations in the Fifth Service Command to stop accepting college training applications under the Army Specialized Training Reserve Program after December 31. Henry Lovesy aged 18 pled guilty before Mayor Franz Woodworth to unlawfully operating an automobile with an open exhaust. Chief J B Grogan says the disturbance occurred at 1 am. Lovesy was fined $10 and costs.
