In Nelsonville and surrounding valleys, 34 open shop coal mines are now operating with 3 033 workers as back to work efforts push to new highs. Daily loadings across the district top 12 000 tons, with 829 men added since September 29.
Frank McGarry of Pittston announces a new miners union to challenge John L. Lewis's leadership in the hard coal field. He states the group operates separately from the Save the Union Committee based in Pittsburgh and will sever the anthracite organization from the international union. The insurgent leader cites high salaries of mine officials as a reason for the split and aims to mobilize independent forces.
Mr and Mrs Pr L L Fagan accompanied by Arthur McCoy Mrs Catherine Phillips and son Edward Phillips of Clarks Chapel traveled to Jackson last Sunday as guests of Mrs Jennie Willis and her son Faye Willis. Willis is related to the Philips and Fagan families.

President hopeful Herbert Hoover plans four campaign speeches as he departs Washington for the West. The key address will be in St. Louis on Friday, with earlier talks set for Cumberland Maryland Louisville Kentucky and Pueblo Colorado. Hoover will press farm relief proposals and urge an extra congressional session if elected. Mrs Hoover oversees moving preparations to California.
Zanesville officers and Roseville Marshal Pangle raided Charles Schultz home on South River Road seizing 37 barrels of grape wine totaling about 2 316 gallons valued at 7800. Schultz was arrested on dry laws charges and may be arraigned today. He admitted making the wine and some was seven years old.
Two families from Middletown and Cincinnati travel home from a Parkersburg funeral when their sedan breaks down near Canaanville. They are stranded in Athens without funds as Salvation Army officers arrange shelter at local hotels and seek aid from Middletown's Bankers Gravel Pit for car repairs.
Funeral services for Joseph Connally age 78 father of the Rev W F Connally will be held at 9 tomorrow morning at St Anthony's Church Bridgeport. Burial will follow at Mt Carmel Cemetery Elim Grove West Virginia.
The body of an unidentified man about six feet tall was found partly submerged in a stream near Alliance early today. Police and investigators began examining the scene and seeking identification, with no immediate cause of death released.
A small dog loitered at Ace Carsey's Willow Creek farm overnight killing seven chickens and fighting two watchdogs. Carsey shot the dog after retrieving his gun, sent the head to Columbus for rabies testing, and later killed his own dogs. The dog bore a Mill Street Athens tag. owner unlocated. Columbus reported rabies. No local health report of similar incidents.
Secretary of State Clarence J. Brown dismissed the entire Cuyahoga County Board of Elections after a grand jury report and Attorney General Edward C. Turner findings. The action followed investigation of alleged election fraud and specifically excepted Bernice S. Pike from Turner’s recommendations.
Walter Parker 40, formerly of Athens, died in a Cleveland hospital at 10 last night from blood poisoning due to a carbuncle on his neck. He leaves a widow and one son aged three, two other children having predeceased him, and three brothers Pearl Harley Wade and three sisters Mrs Moore and Mrs Whaley. Funeral arrangements not announced.
In Lorain on October 30 U P observers say Judge A F O Neil Democratic candidate for Congress would win the largest local vote if working girls vote. His campaign leans on his past as judge and chewing gum with gum wrappers bearing his photo and literature.
In Cambridge Mrs Ida Braggs thought her son George McCoy was dead and buried him after a man found unconscious in Akron died and was identified as McCoy. The real McCoy later appeared at his mother's home, prompting a renewed effort to verify the burial.
Police Chief McClure attributed the home bombing of publisher R. C. Hoiles in Mansfield to Cleveland gangsters though he did not disclose a motive. Neighbors saw a man flee to a roadster after the blast and officers found yard debris possibly aiding bomber identification.
Howard FE. Wurlitzer died at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in New York and his body will be returned to Cincinnati. He had served as president of the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company, a leading American musical instrument maker.

Prizes will be awarded after the parade, with dancing to an Ohio University orchestra and an eight to ten piece band. Court Street will host lights, decor, booths, and refreshments as traffic is halted from 4 pm.

The Business and Professional Women's Club of Athens held its annual Hallowe'en party in the City Building rooms from 7 to 10 pm. Decorations matched the occasion as pumpkin pie doughnuts and coffee were served. Music came from club members and seven tables played Cootie with Gladys Brooks winning first prize and Bertha Brown receiving booby. The event was organized by club officers under President Mrs John Jagers.
