The Athens area sees fewer new influenza and pneumonia cases with ongoing caution urged. Daily reports from Athens and surrounding towns note 34 influenza and 3 pneumonia cases in 24 hours, plus one death at the State Hospital. Medical staff call for nurses though responses remain scarce.
New York lieutenant James O Neale Jr. reported as mortally wounded in France after service. He is identified as the nephew of Secretary McAdoo and is listed among officers believed to have died from battle injuries.
Reports from Versailles indicate the armistice terms for Germany will resemble those offered to Bulgaria, with extra precautions and possibly harsher clauses. Washington Oct 30 The United States Shipping Board canceled its contract with Bethlehem Steel for a 60 million dollar ship building plant at Alameda California. Work to double the plant had been stopped two weeks earlier as officials said completion could not occur before its usefulness expired.
After tomorrow only two months remain this year to purchase war savings stamps. About 32 million Onioars own the stamps now selling at 4.21 dollars each or 42 dollars for the 1000 limit. By Friday the price for 1000 stamps rises to 8.44 dollars and in December to 3 846.
Washington reports older drafted men will begin lighter physical training exercises. The program shifts from the more strenuous courses used for ages 21 to 31 to a milder regimen designed for older recruits.
Stayner Ontario October 29 Dr J A Johnston died early yesterday from pneumonia after a ten day illness following influenza He attended patients despite illness and collapsed He served on the School Board Town Council and was a member of the Masonic Order and Canadian Order of Foresters He was thirty three and leaves a wife and three young children.
Theodore DeBooy reports the discovery of a new Indian tribe and three series of waterfalls in the Sierra De Perija region near the Venezuela Brazil Colombia frontier. Findings place the tribe in uncharted southwest Venezuela along the Andean foothills with related natural features.
Columbus October 30 The War Manpower Commission urged coal miners who moved to other work to return to mining or contact the nearest U S Employment Office. The appeal targets workers who have left ten mines and lists hundreds of Hager men as references. Local checks will try to locate other available miners.
Thirteen Pennsylvania coal mines halted by the Fuel Administration for noncompliance with the clean coal program. The move brings the total to 99 mines barred from shipping or mining coal for this reason.
Dispatch from Paris dated October 30 describes handbills found after Roye’s capture. The leaflets urge civilians to gather nettles, dry them, weave greaves, and sell them to Germany for 28 marks per 200 pounds. Germans are purchasing nettle fiber cloth.
The Messenger classified section sells apples and more by reaching buyers in Franklin and Madison counties. A test by Jos Mulligan shows 186 bushels sold to a Madison county buyer after placing a small ad. The notice claims ads also help sell houses, find tenants, recruit workers, and locate buyers for any item, promising reliable results.
