The fight featured heavy artillery and rifle fire, with strong casualties and many wounded.
General Schofield and Blunt force sweep rebel forces from Maysville Arkansas after a dawn attack. About 5 000 to 7 000 rebels routed leaving artillery and transport destroyed. Union troops pursue Windham toward Huntsville as rebels retreat to the Arkansas River valley. Major General Certs declares frontier army accomplished its mission.
Civil War dispatches describe a left wing advance toward the Cavalry and communications lines, with reports of Lee’s forces retreating from Leesburg and Winchester. Rumors claim a larger Confederate withdrawal but confirmations are mixed from Charlestown, Martinsburg, and Front Royal.
