Illinois factions wage a bitter battle to seize control of liquor outlets in a coal district. Rival gangs fight for dominance amid escalating threats and arrests.
In Marion Illinois on October 29 19 we report rising tensions as Birger and Shelton gangs feud over the coal belt liquor business. Charlies Birger vows to pursue Sheltons amid ongoing shootings and armored car style liquor transport.
Marrakech Morocco October 29 The sultan celebrated as he wed and witnessed the weddings of his three sons and a daughter. He rode a bicycle to the palace and offered a new costume to any of his slaves who wished to marry at once. Thirty five ceremonies followed.
Charles Dorr a 78 year old farmer of Canaanville was found hanged in a barn stall after his wife died last July. Grandson Paul Dorr discovered the body. Dorr leaves six children and two brothers. Funeral set for tomorrow with burial at Athens city cemetery.
Bulldozed debris and scattered damage reported as a strong storm lashed the region. Roofs were torn free and several structures sustained damage, prompting evacuations and emergency responses along the coast.

Somerville New Jersey October 29 special prosecutor Alexander Simpson travels to Philadelphia to locate an eye witness linked to the Mills Hall murder case four years old. Dr Otto R Schultze reports the tongue missing from the body but cannot decide if it was cut or decayed. He traces the bullets’ path and notes organs were removed for analysis. Simpson hopes a writer of an anonymous letter will join his list of two hundred witnesses corroborating Jane Gibson the pig woman.
Prosecuting Attorney R. W. Finsterwald says he does not believe the October grand jury will be called after an inquest into a death. The report exonerates Cady and Lines, though charges of manslaughter are advised to be filed.
The coroner's report filed in Common Pleas court this morning recommends exoneration for Deputy Sheriff J M Cady and State Prohibition Officer H A Sines in the death of Lawrence Bolton. It also recommends filing charges of manslaughter against Constable Harry Dalton and State Officer Joe Jonas. The report notes Bolton came to his محک.
Athletic Director O C Bird secured 500 more seats for the Ohio Wesleyan game in Delaware for students and alumni. Ohio section totals 1500 seats after a prior 1000, with over 600 tickets sold early. Judge IL G Worstell today stated that the October grand jury may be recalled if Prosecuting Attorney R W Finsterwald chooses to prosecute the manslaughter indictments against Cady Lines Jonas and Dalton. Finsterwalds term ends at the start of January, and if he prosecutes it must occur in the October term the grand jury has indicted but may recall.
Mrs Iva McElhinny Mercer 47 wife of L L Mercer died at 9 45 pm at 31 Woodard avenue after a year long illness of trouble. Funeral at 2 pm Monday at the residence. Burial in West Union street cemetery. She was born in Meigs county and lived in Athens 25 years. She was active in the Christian church and Pythian Sister lodge. Survived by husband and daughter Ruby Gladys Mercer and her parents Isaac and Mrs McElhinny Coolville. One sister predeceased her.
Coroner L W Sanders reports an inquest into Lawrence Bolton's death in 1926 Athens County Ohio. Witnesses named include P H McKinley and others. Post mortem by Drs Danford notes a punctured wound through the heart.

Lawrence Bolton 26 of Wales Mill was shot in Albany while with Gladys Farley 17 on school grounds. An inquest found the death by bullet through the heart from a 32-20 calibre gun, likely fired by Harry Dalton or Joe Jonas. Prosecution recommended manslaughter charges for both shooters and exoneration for J M Cady and H A Lines who carried 38 calibre guns.
Cincinnati October 29 John W Pattison the flying Democratic candidate for state treasurer ended his campaign traveling by airplane. He visited fifteen cities to deliver his message and seek ballots. Pattison is vice president of the Union Central Life company.
In Cincinnati authorities questioned a Black man named Edward King and a white man named Curtin Williams, both detained in Louisville, about the murder of Beulah Purvis, 19, of Lawrenceburg Indiana. King initially implicated Williams, who denied the charges. King later withdrew his statement.
Philadelphia reports a better baby contest judged by the Binet Simon intelligence test rather than physical traits. In the under six months class Miss Mary O Keefe scored 100 percent, able to sit alone balance head hear noises follow objects and grasp items.
In San Francisco North Beach the Catholic church of Sta. Peter and Paul was bombed for the third time in under a year. Police investigated as the building sustained damage and residents reported the incident near the city center.
Isaac, who left home as a boy after the Civil War, has been found in Cumberland Maryland by a nephew who visited Thomas The brothers Isaac and Thomas were separated for fifty five years before their reunion and plans to visit.
Toledo police reported no promising leads in the $12,200 reward case for the clubbing murders. Lilly Croy was buried after being beaten to death on Monday, with a large crowd attending the service. Julius W. Wiest, her half brother, accused police of negligence for delayed action after reporting her disappearance.

Two of four bandits attempting a Bank of Detroit robbery in Detroit were killed instantly as they exchanged fire with a bank guard and two passing police officers. The incident occurred on October 29 with the other two bandits fleeing.

Mrs. Orpha Baker Reynolds Herrold 83 widow of Athens pioneer William Henry Herrold died at home at 26 West Mulberry Street. Born 1843 in the Baker settlement she was daughter of Michael Reynolds and granddaughter of Justus Reynolds a Revolutionary War settler. Funeral at 3 pm Saturday at the residence with burial in West Union Street cemetery. She left a daughter Rosie Herrold Hawk who died in 1912 and was a lifelong member of the First Methodist Church of Athens.
Kenneth G. Ormiston the radio operator who fled with a trunkful of women's clothing across the country to New York is said to offer key evidence in the Aimee Semple McPherson perjury and conspiracy case. The trunk found in a New York hotel contained lingerie sleeping apparel an evangelist's dressing robe and evening gowns according to Asa Keyes.
Washington, Oct. 29. coastal listeners report a failure of east station signals after a promising season. Commerce Department reports north and south signals come in fairly strong while east signals remain weak or non existent.
The Fourth Circuit affirmed a federal injunction restraining the United Mine Workers from forcibly attempting to unionize Pittsburgh Coal mines in West Virginia with qualifications. The court ruled that advocacy of union membership in public speeches and circulating notices may be protected unless it crosses into coercive actions during campaigns.
Miss Helen Marshall, a cashier at the National Laundry plant in Akron, was attacked as she entered the plant and the bandits fled with a payroll totaling 1700 dollars.
James J. Mercer, who admitted killing wholesale shoe maker G. Harvey Geist, was taken to the state hospital at Columbus. Mercer was formally judged insane by the probate court and released into the custody of his father after a jail term. He had been held in Athens while officials debated disposition and avoided trial due to insanity questions.
A student committee from Professor Gianque's orthopedic department plans a citywide posture drive. The project aims to improve posture for all students from grades through university level in Athens.
About one hundred men sought jobs at the Sheetwood Flooring company after news of its reorganization to raise output.
