Dr. George A. Works of the University of Chicago urged rural communities to reduce blame on farmers and seek broader tax reform to fund education. He cited Ohio and New York data showing wealth and income disparities and recommended indirect taxes, better roads, and school consolidations to equalize opportunities.
The Athens Retail Merchants Institute announces a three day program next Monday to Wednesday with intensive short courses in salesmanship efficiency advertising and business management led by J. W. Griest from Chicago. Noon luncheons and 7 pm evening sessions are planned with tickets issued to contributors and others welcome on payment. Local clubs will adjust schedules to attend the talks and the Chamber will skip a luncheon to allow members access.
J. W. Griest conducts a three day series on business knowledge and salesmanship at the Masonic building Athens corner Court and Union streets. Luncheons at noon with topics on business impact and personal efficiency daily. Reservations required one day ahead through Judge S. M. Johnson.
Senator Brookhart Republican Iowa says he will introduce a substitute for the McNary Haugen farm price stabilization bill when Congress reconvenes. He argues the $150 million starting fund is insufficient and cites cotton needing $500 million and total needs near $1.5 billion for exportable surplus financing. He plans to cover corn wheat barley rice oats and all other exportable farm products.
Diverse sources argue the farmer faces disadvantages and urge state and school authorities to boost attention and reforms to equalize educational opportunities for urban and city children.
For the first time in local Grange history state officers will confer the sixth degree Flora on more than 200 candidates at Athens High School Saturday evening October 29. Many will then attend the national Grange session in Cleveland November 18 to seek the seventh degree. An Ohio State Grange session in nineteen counties includes this event with Dean Vivian of Ohio State University presenting an illustrated lecture on Grange symbolism at 6 39 PM.
A dynamite bomb exploded near Parnassus pa suspending traffic to the Valley Camp Coal company mines. The crude setup averted complete bridge destruction, but the blast shook houses. Valley Camp has faced mine troubles since the April 1 suspension and employs non union workers.
At Xenia on October 28 J Knox Montgomery president of the Anti Cigaret Alliance of America outlined plans to link the weed to liquor. The convention opened at nine but only one delegate arrived by ten. Six women and three men heard Montgomery last night. The convention closed today.

Police report a theft of an Essex coach owned by K. R. Vermillion. The vehicle, with Ohio license 665-185, was last seen on Congress Street and remains unrecovered with no trace found by investigators.
In New York a 77 year old rift between actress Clara Morris and sister Eliza Burtis is healed when Surrogate George Slater unites them. Eliza, 78, living in Hell's Kitchen, inherits the $15 000 Clara left at death, ending decades of poverty for Eliza.
About 1800 teachers from 13 counties gathered in Athens for the Southeastern Ohio Teachers association annual meeting. Dr George A Works of the University of Chicago urged expanding rural education while maintaining a democratic type to unlock individual genius. Five hundred students joined a massed chorus, and the Athens high school band performed as part of a full program. Balloting for officers occurs tonight with a general session to follow.
