Rio Grande College President to be Inaugurated November 4

Gallipolis dispatch announces the inauguration of Rev. F W McDermott as Rio Grande College president on Saturday November 4 at two o clock in Community Hall. Dr Bland L Standley vice president of Ohio State University will speak along with several Baptist officials and college leaders. Doctor Holzer will preside and trustees meet earlier that day.

Fire at Gallipolis Motor Company causes smoke

Gallipolis city fire department battled a blaze at the Gallipolis Motor Company at 10 45 Thursday night. Fireman Frank Wood said the fire started from hot ashes dumped in a rear trash can and caused no damage though the building filled with smoke and fumes. A supper and alumni event followed in the evening with Garland Elliott arranging.

Tabit Leases His Hotel to Smiths Again

GALLIPOLIS The Lafayette Hotel in Gallia County is re leased to Earl W. and Mary E. Smith for ten years from September 16. Judge H W Cherrington notes the lease as a major Gallia property transaction in his 35 years. Tabit preferred extending the present lessees despite a higher offer. The 1927 hotel building also houses the Commercial & Savings Bank and Gallipolis Department Store. A second lease covers the corner Court and Third property to E W Clark and M G Elliott for three years starting in November.

Miller Acting As De Facto Ohio Governor

Gallipolis report says Harry M. Miller former Gallia County executive committee chair and current State Utilities Commissioner acts as Ohio governor in Bricker’s absence. Miller says he makes decisions on minor admin issues while not defending policies and works from his town office in the State Office Building.

Aged OHE Patient Buried in City

Miss Emma Kleckner, 101, died at the Ohio Hospital for Epileptics Wednesday night. She spent 46 years at the institution after admission from Brown County on October 26, 1898. Known as Grandma, she was loved by fellow patients and survived by a brother in Lynchburg. Burial will be at Mound Hill Cemetery.

GALLIPOLIS The Holzer Hospital reports no admissions Thursday forenoon an unusual note. Logan FFA Discusses Beef Cattle Projects

Logan Chapter of FFA spent Wednesday afternoon discussing beef cattle and steer projects. Twenty five Logan High freshmen and sophomores visited the steer project of David Inboden. County Agent James R. Smoot led a group discussion on management and feeding. The boys also visited farms of Dr. H. M. Boocks and Mr. Lemon. Several plan to start steer and beef cattle projects.

Lunch to be served at Republican rally in Pt Pleasant

Mrs C F Stout heads a women’s division lunch for hundreds of voters at the Legion Building in Pt Pleasant on Viand Street. The meal includes baked beans wiener sandwiches doughnuts and coffee served by local clubs. Senator Wherry is set to speak at 1 30 pm with Daniel Boone Dawson state issues and other candidates expected to address briefly.

Missing Point Pleasant Girls Alarm Families

Mary Hayman and Mary Alice Schultz, two Leon girls, disappeared after leaving home Monday to attend school in Point Pleasant. Trooper H. D. Coyner found no trace and it is uncertain whether they reached Point Pleasant or where they went after the bus. Numerous high school students know the girls and grow increasingly worried for their safety.

Youth Is Injured In Huntington Highway Crash

Robert Thomas age 17 son of Sgt and Mrs Paul F Thomas of 2220 Jefferson Blvd was hospitalized at Huntington Hospital after a highway accident near Huntington Tuesday night. His car left the road and struck a tree as it neared the city. His injuries are believed to be serious.

Civic Group Takes Action on State Tax

At a Kiwanis Club meeting in Point Pleasant a resolution of the West Virginia District was considered to distribute net earnings from state liquor stores to municipalities. The profits have funded police and local alcohol controls, while the group also authorized a committee to sponsor a victory celebration marking the end of World War I. Hostess Mrs. Beall won the club prize amid an evening of refreshments and music by guest artist Mrs. Robert Heslop.

Agree on Tax Values in Hannan District Farm Land Assessment

POINT PLEASANT Assessor Frank Morrison returned from Charleston after conferring with the auditor and the tax commissioner on assessing a subdivided tract in Hannan District. Many lots were sold, later bought by one owner who seeks farm land status. State officials agreed to cooperate in the adjustment.
