Guy Conine his wife and baby Sunday night faced near asphyxiation when a gas leak filled the Moore avenue house. Mrs Conine regained consciousness after a failed gargle while Mr Conine and the baby were treated by Pearl Carr and wife who heard the distress call and summoned a doctor. The family slowly recovered though none are fully safe from the incident.

Burglars Take Twelve Dollars in Central Avenue Theft
Robbers entered the Rardin home on Central Avenue Saturday night while occupants slept. They removed about twelve dollars, two pairs of trousers and a bank belonging to a boy, returning the pockets emptied, and six dollars more found. The bank was later located near the Armitage watering station. Police report several suspicious persons seen but no arrest yet.

Father Mattingly Leaves Carthage for Logan Pastorship
Rev. J. B. Mattingly of St. Pauls church departs after eleven years to lead St. Johns Church in Logan succeeding Father Powers. He built and paid for the new church and parsonage at Mill and College, remodeled St. Johns in Carthage, and expanded church memberships. His departure is deeply regretted by church members and town leaders alike. His successor at Carthage has not been named.

Death of Henry Willard near Guyeville
Henry Willard aged sixty nine years five months and twenty eight days died at his home near Guyeville Friday evening after a long illness from a complication of diseases. He served in the Civil War and suffered later from exposure. He married Mary Katharine Nelson in July 1858. they had one son and three daughters who survive with the wife. A Methodist convert for nearly twenty years, he was laid to rest in the nearby cemetery after funeral services at the Methodist Episcopal church in Guyeville.

Athens Board of Trade Settles Defunct Labor Train Debt
The Athens Board of Trade met in the mayor’s office to settle with Luhrig Coal Co for the debt owed the B&O Western on the abandoned labor train to Luhrig after a wreck. Receipts fell from $149.76 in October to $7.50 by January 16, leaving Athens about $740 of the deficit and the board offering $526 as the town’s share, acknowledging the railroad’s role in the failure.

Death of Charles Leonard Dean A Shelby Farmer
Charles Leonard Dean born August 20 1874 Athens Ohio died October 17 near Shelby after a brief illness. He joined the M E church early and remained a member. He married Jennie Robinson January 15 1902 and became a farmer in Shelby. He was patient in illness and sang hymns, buried in Shelby cemetery under Modern Woodmen of America. He is survived by his wife one brother and five sisters. Funeral services were held October 18 at the Shelby M E Church conducted by Rev I N Woodard.
