United States and Soviet Union Set SALT Talks Start

Washington and Moscow announced they will begin SALT talks in Helsinki on November 17 1968 to curb the strategic arms race. Secretary Rogers cautioned the talks may take years and stressed this marks a preliminary discussion rather than immediate results.

Forces Enter Lebanon As Middle East Crisis Intensifies

In Beirut over the weekend an armored column, reportedly 300 men with five armored cars and mortars, moved into hills near a village four miles from Lebanon’s eastern border. Lebanese troops blocked routes. reports of kidnappings emerged. Tripoli saw street fighting for a second day with eleven deaths and a PLO attack burning a police post.

Local crash injures three. two held for observation after Route 54 collision

At about 7 15 pm Saturday a two vehicle crash at Route 54 and Radford Road left three area residents with injuries. Pat Canine 22 of M4 Clark St was admitted for observation at Shetter ing Arms Hospital. Boyd Cornwell 25 and Willie White 35 were treated for minor injuries and released. Blaine Cornwell 25 was not hurt. An unidentified man was later detained by Athens County Deputies after a gun incident on Route 278 near Nelsonville. In Jackson-Jefferson Cardliney former Congressman Robert E Sweeney urged Gov Rhodes to answer Life Magazine charges or resign citing a $100 000 income tax penalty and undisclosed sources of funds.

Helicopter Pilot Sparks Major Vietnam Battle

In an apparent surprise strike near the Yo Bo Woods, U S troops of the 21st Infantry Division fought for five hours after a helicopter pilot spotted activity in crater sites. Fifty-one North Vietnamese soldiers were killed, two Americans died, and 12 were wounded as U S forces, aided by gunships, swept the area seeking the supply and assembly point for an enemy regiment.

Rioting Breaks Out At Kenya Hospital

Nairobi Kenya AP report states a clash at a Soviet financed hospital opening between President Jomo Kenyatta and opposition leader Oginga Odinga triggered a riot. Five killed including a 7 year old, 48 wounded by gunfire from presidential guards as Kisumu opposition territory tensions flared. Odinga attended with supporters. Kenyatta warned against detaining him.
