2000 Teachers To Attend Southeastern Ohio Conclave

Athens welcomes about 2,000 Southeastern Ohio school teachers and administrators for a full day program by the Southeastern Ohio Education Association. Activities include a 9 a m general session at Ohio University Memorial Auditorium, three noontime luncheons, and 14 afternoon sectional meetings with speakers Gladys Perrow Wehr and Dr. Channing Pollock.

Farm Bureau Dinner Friday in Athens County

The Athens County Farm Bureau Co operative Association will hold its annual meeting after a 7 o'clock dinner Friday night in the new Kurtz Street display store. Ohio Farm Bureau leader Lewis Warhing ton will speak, with Wayne Wingett presiding. The Athens Grange will serve, and attendees should enter via Oak Street due to Kurtz Street paving.

Teacher Wins Suit Against Albany Board

The Fourth District Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Hilah Williams in a dispute with the Albany Consolidated School District over a continuing teaching contract. Williams began in 1937 and taught through 1943-44 except one year in McArthur. The board did not tender a contract for the current year. Other cases were submitted but not decided.

Distinguished Flying Cross for Capt Gill in Italy

Captain Joseph S. Gill son of Clarence M. Gill 209 E State St Athens Ohio earned the Distinguished Flying Cross after guiding a Liberator home with two failed engines and severed hydraulics over Wiener Neustadt. Despite heavy flak the crew survived and the bomber, loaded with over 450 holes, was not repaired. Gill has flown 29 combat missions with Lt Col Tomhave's Liberator Group and also wears the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.

President Walter S Gamertsfelder announced five Ohio University staff will serve on the Committee on Personal Education to advise on courses of study curricula and training. Dean of Women Irma E Voigts chairs with Albert C Gubitz Henry J Jeddeloh Gaige B Paulsen and Thomas C McCracken. A second panel on Revision of the Digest of Administrative Customs and Procedures includes Ralph F Beckert H E Benz Irene L Devlin Irma E Voigt and George W Starcher as chair to propose changes for the president’s approval.

Dr Frey Re-Elected Kiwanis Division Eleven Official

Dr Carl E Frey professor of bacteriology at Ohio University has been re elected lieutenant governor of Division Eleven Ohio District Kiwanis International for 1945 He will visit clubs in the division speak to meetings advise officers and report to district governor Herbert C Doughty of Portsmouth Clubs in the eleventh division include Athens Bellaire Cambridge Glouster Marietta Martins Ferry Woodsfield and Zanesville He previously served as president of the Athens Kiwanis Club.

Halloween Observed by East Side School

East Side School students observed Halloween with class parties after recess. Children decorated rooms with paper pumpkins black cats and witches masks were made at school from paper sacks. They played games heard stories sang Halloween songs and were served cider and doughnuts.

State Forest Office Opens on Athens Campus

The Ohio Division of Forestry announced a permanent State Forestry Department office at Ohio University Athens on 16 E Union St. under District Forester Irvin Dickman. The office will oversee forestry supervision, fire control, and education across 14 Southeastern Ohio counties and manage Zaleski Waterloo Blue Rock and Hocking Forest Parks from Athens. Fire patrols are flown from Newark Cambridge Marietta and the OU airport.
