Federal Reserve data show September industrial production up six points from August with higher shipments and factory employment rising to 60.3 of the 1923-25 average. U S Steel directs approves regular $1.75 per share dividend despite a quarterly earnings deficit, noting improved production since July.
Columbus action by the State Board of Control approves releasing 400000 in state aid to repay teachers in weak districts. Finance director Bevis, absent earlier, joins four Republicans in unanimous vote. Funds to be distributed when available as the treasury replenishes from utility taxes later in November.
The Standard Oil Company of Ohio raised the state wide price by half a cent per gallon for all grades, effective Thursday. This brings Ohio retail prices up about 8 percent for October, following a 25 percent wholesale rise since October 1 due to reduced crude output in Texas and Oklahoma. New prices will be 12, 18 and 16 cents per gallon for the companys three brands, plus four cents state tax and one cent federal tax.
Jay Skinner, indicted by the last Athens County Grand Jury for shooting at a railroad train during the recent mine disorders in this district, was sentenced to Ohio State Reformatory at Mansfield and fined $50 and costs by Judge O. F. Rowland in Athens County Common Pleas Court today. Alva Marks was fined $100 and costs, sentenced to 30 days in Athens County Jail and his right to drive an automobile suspended for six months by Judge Rowland when he pleaded guilty to driving a car while intoxicated. A jury of 10 men and two women returned verdicts of not guilty in Common Pleas Court, Tuesday afternoon in the case of Samuel MacDonald, who was tried on charges of intoxication and pointing firearms. McDonald had been accused of being intoxicated and of having pointed a loaded revolver at Captain Havelin and Lieutenant Thompson of the Ohio National Guard at Buchtel on Aug. 20. Carlos McCrum pleaded guilty to a charge of failure to provide for minor children, before Judge Rowland and was ordered to pay $20 per month to ward the support of his children. He was also placed on probation for one year. Judgment for $440 is sought by C. T. Huffman in a suit filed in Common Pleas Court today against Emma Huffman. The petition states that there is due the plaintiff from the defendant $400 on a promissory note with interest at 6 per cent from Dec. 18, 1929, and $40 on another note with interest from July 15, 1930.
Mrs F R Flies From Atlanta to New York to teach at Todhunter's School after leaving Governor's campaign party. She said she would not let her husband's campaign interfere with her teaching unless absolutely necessary while changing planes in Washington.
Mrs. Parsons Mable Grones Parsons 45 wife of G L Parsons of Chicago died at home in Chicago after an extended illness. Funeral party to Athens Friday at 10 30 am with services Saturday at 10 am at F G Grones home 4 Church Street. She was born and raised in Athens and leaves husband son Frank Bonifield, mother, sister Addie Marie Grones, and brother Don S Grones. Funeral services planned in Chicago tomorrow.
Ruth Campbell organizes a modern efficiency kitchen for The Messenger Cooking School at Athens Senior High Auditorium. The display uses local Athens range refrigerator work table cutlery pots pans and other utensils and includes local grocery products meat markets and dairies.
D H Edwards longtime Athens County deputy sheriff and later Wyoming ranch owner died yesterday after months of illness. Born in New England Athens County he served under Sheriff M M Riley. Funeral in Gillette where the family home rests for the winter. Survived by a widow and four children Mary of Athens Harvey Almond and Harold in Wyoming.
Amlesville resident Henry M Burns a 58 year member of Athens Odd Fellows was awarded a Grand Lodge gold emblem at his home Monday night by Athens lodge members. A box of candy was given to Mrs Burns. Logan reports jurors found Tom McAllister guilty of assault rather than the original assault on a three year old girl. The finding carries a maximum $200 fine and six months in jail. Foreman Mike Hansel led twelve jurors in the verdict, with no indication of a new trial motion.
John Red Downing 45, pardoned Hamilton County convict, confessed to killing Mrs. Marie Bonzo 44 in her basement after an impulse. Police say first degree murder charges will be filed. Downing described grabbing her and striking with a steering wheel and a ginger ale bottle.
Marietta Ohio hosts a Washington pageant with over 400 participants at Government Dam No. 17. Judge David H. Thomas delivers the welcome. Weeklong events continue along the Ohio River with DAR markers to be unveiled at Hockingport Athens County and Shade River Meigs County, with Alice Rardin unveiling the Hockingport marker.
Raymond Tucker of Chauncey is treated for an infected left foot after stepping on a catfish horn at Cornell basin. Dr. W V Sprague gave anti toxin for tetanus Monday night. doctors believe no further danger from tetanus.
Florence hot blast stove advertised in The Messenger sold within a day to Charles Bolin of Richland Ave. Ad promises right goods to right people and highlights a Nelly large size stove priced at 35 dollars.
The Ohio University humor publication Green Goat appears for a second time this year in Athens streets. The issue spotlights football and homecoming ahead, plus a new Ohio Personalities page honoring four students or faculty each issue. Readers invited to the Green Goat Hop at Castile Gardens with free admission via coupon.
Athens will dismiss at 2 30 p m Thursday and resume Monday. Teachers attend the 38th annual Southeastern Ohio Education Association session in Jackson Thursday and Friday with dinners and general sessions scheduled. Athens High Glee Club members try out for a representative group to perform Friday at 4 p m at the Eisteddfod Building under K H Kay.
Word reached Athens today of the death in Chillicothe Monday of C A Smith aged about 60 who formerly lived in Nelsonville and Trimble. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 12 oclock at 149 Vine Street Chillicothe with burial there. He died after an operation and leaves a widow two sons Fulton in Chillicothe and Melvin a dentist at Decatur Illinois. Relatives plan to attend.
Miss Helen Hedden and Miss Bertha Shaber of Ohio University School of Music presented a morning convocation at Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Hedden sang three songs and Shaber played several piano pieces to a large student audience with Pres. E. B. Bryan presiding.
Earl Ege, 53, and his wife Ethel, 41, were found shot to death in their Dayton home. Police say the husband apparently killed his wife with a pistol then died by suicide. Authorities cite domestic trouble. Ege was the woman’s third husband.
Democratic candidate Franklin Roosevelt denounces the Four Horsemen of Republican leadership destruction delay deceit and despair in a Baltimore speech praising beer as a revenue plan. He accuses Hoover of hypocrisy and warns of a campaign war as he campaigns across New York Massachusetts and Detroit.
Lemuel Sellers of near Rolandus was found guilty in Justice of Peace H. H. Mees court for possessing an implement designed to manufacture intoxicating liquor. Fined $100 plus costs, he may seek a new trial. Officers’ broad search led to an additional charge of selling liquor to a minor to be tried separately.
Dr Halsey of Cincinnati who led fellowship services at Athens Presbyterian Church left for Jamaica Long Island after the sudden death of his sister. The conference with Missionary and Friendly Societies was canceled and evening services were not held. He expressed a wish to return later to finish the work he outlined.
Will writes from Port of Spain Trinidad describing a flight over the Amazon River and its great width. He mentions stopping at French Guiana and Dutch Guiana, visiting Devils Island near the French prison, and plans to end the day in Trinidad with Warden Lawes of Sing Sing.
Chauncey residents awoke to a blaze destroying five frame houses owned by the New York Coal Company in the Mudsock District. Edwin Edwards, living across the street, was arrested amid the chaos and planned charges of carrying a concealed weapon. Firefighters fought high winds with limited water as explosions and dynamiting attempts failed to stop the spread.

A Friday banquet at Hotel Berry begins at 6 30 PM with Wilkinson addressing active members. Saturday at 9 AM he speaks to pledges as the conference closes with group discussions of special fraternity problems.
