In Hildesheim Germany rescue teams reached seven of 49 miners trapped after flood waters from an artificial lake flooded the lower level of a 300 foot mine. Eighty escaped earlier as drilling continued to reach the others.
Kent State University in Kent Ohio inaugurated Dr. Robert I. White as the sixth president. In his address he cited growing challenges including urban problems knowledge growth and the need for international education. About 300 college representatives attended.
Adlai E. Stevenson faced taunts and a spitting assault after a United Nations Day address before 1750 at the Dallas Municipal Auditorium. Police arrested two men as about 100 demonstrators pressed around his car while Stevenson urged calm and asked a protester for help.
Washington reports a bipartisan House Judiciary Committee majority backing a stronger civil rights bill but President Kennedy intervene failed to close gaps. Republicans demand administration support for one of their measures as drought drives water project in Mount Orab Ohio.
Canton, Ohio The Ohio Power Co will join Buckeye Power Inc and a group of rural electric cooperatives to build a proposed power plant. Construction starts November 4 at a site along the Ohio River seven miles south of Steubenville near the Tidd generating station.
Hurricane Ginny with 95 mph winds threatened the South Carolina coast prompting evacuations and school closures. Beach areas from Charleston to the North Carolina line were ordered to evacuate as gales and rising seas affected coastal Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Flights, ships, and bases prepared for rapid moves and shelter for evacuees was set up in area schools.
The federal government designated 452 counties in 20 states for drought emergency loans but Ohio was excluded. Crews fought five new fires in Southeastern Ohio as the drought stretched into day 44. Forest Service teams searched near New Straitsville and Pittsburg Hollow while weather officials predicted warm, humid conditions this weekend.
The 15 000 strong GI force completed the transatlantic airlift from Fort Hood to Sembach Air Base in 63 hours 20 minutes, beating predicted times by 20 minutes. A 2nd Armored Division awaits a mock invasion near East Germany as critics question realism and depot protection.
Hartford reporting that Senator Barry Goldwater challenged Governor Nelson Rockefeller’s Republican standing. Goldwater doubted Rockefeller’s stated moderate stance, saying his own conservatism makes the governor’s position unclear and potentially non Republican. Inland ship traffic began moving as 2000 Seafarers' International Union of Canada members voted to end a four day strike. The walkout tied up at least 91 vessels on eastern waters as trustee provisions were agreed with federal officials to avoid changes to the union and its leadership. Ships reported moving and Canada Steamship Lines stated movement across the Seaway.
Negotiations between Marietta Manufacturing Co and seven crafts continued on the 25th day of a shipyard strike. Union leaders said joint sessions with the company and Tu Endie Wei Metal Trades Council were held, with further talks planned at the Lowe Hotel. About 600 production workers are on strike and nearly 100 supervisors and office staff remain furloughed. A federal mediator is overseeing discussions.
Two fires broke out in Meigs and Athens Counties late this morning. A patrol plane described one blaze near the Pomeroy Golf Course as bad, with Forestry crews and the Pomeroy fire department responding. A second fire clustered near Oak Grove Jolly Y southwest of Nelsonville, with crews en route and no extent reported at press time.
Ohio Governor James A. Rhodes spoke to about 400 Ohio Society of New York members at the Biltmore Hotel about a program for total economic development to create 200 000 jobs. Demonstrators urged blocking extradition of Mae Mallory, and Rhodes defended the Supreme Court in the Mallory case. He announced a Washington office to bring federal contracts to Ohio and touted debt reduction, welfare cuts, and job gains as proof of progress.
W M Brode of Newcomerstown is the apparent low bidder at 45 505 for repairs to the Me Connelsville Dam on the Muskingum River. Fred E Marr of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources said the work will raise steel cells and install a sheet piling cut off wall, remove a deteriorated wall, and place rip rap. The project, needed after the March 1963 flood, aims to prevent water from bypassing the dam and should finish by fall.
