Legacy of Mason County's Founding and Early Pioneers in Point Pleasant
In 1804 Mason County West Virginia was created in the William Owens home at Point Pleasant. Notable figures tied to the area include Samuel Clemens as first commissioner of revenue, Dr. Jesse Bennett as the first physician and militia member, and Walter Newman who ran the first licensed tavern and ferried residents. The French buried a lead plate at the Kanawha mouth in 1749, later found by boys in 1846, with two plates ever recovered. George Washington visited Point Pleasant in 1770, surveying lands with Col. Crawford and Andrew Lewis who received vast land grants nearby. Families and soldiers amassed thousands of acres along the Kanawha, and a German potash factory commenced Mason County’s first industry near 18 miles below Point Pleasant.
