London reports a major Allied action on the Piave line in Italy with British and Italian forces attacking across four armies. Dispatches say the operation has begun and is progressing satisfactorily with heavy gains noted by the Allies.
The court of appeals reverses judgments in the Virginia coal cases against Ellis A. Lewis et al. and remands to common pleas for proceedings. It holds eight cents per ton on minable coal remains the sole payment when 50 000 tons cannot be mined and removed, with the lease silent on removal timing. The decision notes the need for completion of the remaining coal under a reasonable time and distinguishes the paid but unmined coal in this lease.
Athens doctors report 147 new influenza cases and 10 pneumonia cases in the county and surrounding areas in 24 hours with no deaths. State facilities show 1882 cases and 7 deaths at Boys Industrial School and multiple other institutions amid a rising influenza trend.

More than 7,000 prisoners and 100 guns captured since Wednesday, with French and American relief feeding tens of thousands civilians sheltering at Denain and surrounding areas.
London reports fighting on the Valenciennes front resumed early today as British forces captured Vendegies sur Ecaille six miles south of Valenciennes after stiff German resistance. Maing, four miles southwest of Valenciennes, fell to British troops who advanced across the high ground and repulsed a German counterattack.
Paris reports the French War Office saying an attack with heavy artillery began along the Serre and Souche rivers north of Laon. The Aisne front saw the village of Ambly-Fleurs fall to French forces east of Ruthel yesterday. On the Oise front near Long Champs Nogales, two German assaults were repulsed and two surprise attacks east of Sissone were broken up.
French troops in Flanders crossed the Lys Canal and seized the Deyazxe Courtrai Road from Peteghem to Olsen forming a front about three miles. In the Serre Valley the French attack took Vesses and Pierre Point northeast of Laon. La Ferte was surrounded and the Serre River was crossed between Crecy and Mortiers.
Ohio switches to new standard time under federal rules with Athens County moving to Eastern Time. The boundary runs from Toledo to Mansfield and Marion to Columbus, then southeast to Gallipolis, with most eastern towns on Eastern Time and others on Central. Clocks are set back tonight and again around Thanksgiving before future Daylight Saving adjustments.

Enormous crowds gathered before the Reichstag building in Berlin demanding abdication and a republic. They paid tribute to Karl Liebknecht recently released from prison and hoisted him into a flower-filled vehicle amid wild cheers. Liebknecht proclaimed The people's hour has arrived.
Columbus reports over 60 new influenza cases in sixty six cities and 272 new deaths. Officials estimate total cases statewide between 126000 and 150000 with deaths near 2500, plus 1116 deaths at Camp Sherman. The epidemic crest is not expected until late next week.
Word from Toledo confirms the death of Dr Frederick Stafford. No further details are provided in the available text.
The late Dr Stafford died on October 18 in Phoenix Arizona from pneumonia linked to the Spanish influenza contracted while serving during the epidemic. Cremation will occur in Pasadena California after his remains are sent there from Phoenix. News of his death was telegraphed to Toledo to his father in law Prof John W Dowd of the Toledo University. Mrs Stafford and daughter Isabel will return to Toledo. Mrs Stafford was formerly Miss Jennie Dowd, granddaughter of the late William W and Isabel Kurtz, a frequent visitor at their N Congress Street home.
