A vigorous windstorm ushers in Ohio’s first cold wave with plunging temperatures across the Great Lakes region. Strong gusts sweep the area as winds remain high and temperatures drop amid unsettled December weather.
Cleveland authorities and the P T A mobilize to curb student drinking after interviews at two high schools where pupils admit attending bootleg dens and bringing liquor to school. Principal Frank I Whitney notes past incidents of in school intoxication and liquor offers to teachers.
A severe early season storm from Lake Michigan lashed Ohio and the Midwest, bringing high winds, heavy rain, and the first snow. Cleveland and Central Ohio faced power and travel disruption as lakeshore wreckage and seamen’s rescue marked the day. A eight year old girl drowned crossing a weakened bridge near Kenosha as snow and wind spread eastward.
Cincinnati reports City Treasurer Wallace Borland of Pittsburgh died aboard the Queen City. The 50 year old suffered heart disease and internal hemorrhages and was found dead in his berth as the steamer left the public landing while Borland had come for the river channel dedication event.
Superintendent A. F. Jixson will address the West Side Parent-Teacher Association meeting tonight at 7 30. A large attendance of members is expected at the West Side School Building location.
The Messenger classifieds advertise a 1927 Chevrolet in good condition for 250 dollars or trade, an eight-teacher residence on Smith Street, and listings for ex it farm equipment and an 86 acre farm on Hard Road with 16 bottom land priced at 3500 dollars.
The Nation reads with affection as Mr Edison revisits Henry Ford's Dearborn site. Edison views his old tools and the chair from his youth reassembled as in the original lab where he formed the idea that lights the world. Many readers share nostalgia for youthful memories.
Hiram Tinkham, Civil War veteran, was struck by a car driven by Homer Radford near New Marshfield on The Plains Highway. The driver and his father said Tinkham stepped into the road after a truck passed. injuries were reported as bruises and not serious after being taken to Dr Nelson's office.
Columbus Oct. 23 The State Supreme Court refused to review the case of Arthur J. Maul alias Keller who was sentenced to die November 1 for the murder of Akron Patrolman William Grubbs.
Stanley Lowe of Columbus faces a manslaughter charge in Common Pleas Court after the October Grand Jury indictment. Lowe pleaded not guilty and posted $2,000 bond. The case concerns the wreck near The Diamond that killed Gilbert Glover of Ward Township after being thrown through a windshield.
Memphis, Tenn. Oct. 23 The American Bar Association pledged full resources to President Hoover to fight alarming disobedience of law and growth of organized crime. Gurney I. Newlin, ABA president, said the association is ready to aid and stressed that lawless enforcement cannot be justified.
In Madison Indiana a salute cannon fired to honor President Hoover exploded injuring Private Robert Earle of the Indiana National Guard and wounding three other crew members creating a serious incident during a welcome salute.
E. M. Garrett, steward of the Athens State Hospital, is in critical condition from heart disease that has troubled him for six months. Little hope is held for recovery.
Harley Leffler's case, indicted for manslaughter by the October Grand Jury, is continued to Monday as he plans to change his plea from not guilty to guilty. Judge L G Worstell will sentence him in the Jacksonville death of Guiney and Lenzie Smith. Leffler is free on a $3,000 bond.
Dr Harry Lefever of Columbus, formerly of this city, was burglarized at his Nel Avenue home when the intruder tied a kettle while police arrived and the doctor, though in darkness, managed to escape.
The body of Menounte Grooms OS, inmate at Athens State Hospital, died by suicide in the Hocking River near Herrold Bridge and was sent to relatives in West Union Adams County. Mrs Grooms, a dementia patient who killed her husband in 1921, escaped a TB cottage and leaped from under the bridge after being observed by Mrs. Morris. Sam Jellison attempted to assist, river rescue failed, coroner rules suicide water death.
Seven people were injured when a trolley car rear section jumped tracks and tipped into an excavation in Brooklyn on October 22. The car settled at a 45 degree angle, rescue crews responded to the scene.
Two Coast Guard patrol boats were sent to assist a freighter grounded off Point Pelee on Lake Erie, about 28 miles from Lorain Ohio, as a relief effort began.
Athens prepares to host several hundred delegates for the Southeastern Ohio Teachers Association convention on Thursday and Friday. Singers and instrumentalists from Athens and surrounding towns join the Ohio University orchestra for a joint program at Memorial Auditorium. Dinners and speakers including Vic Carlton Washburn and Dr Winifred Beton highlight the event as orchestras rehearse and plans finalize.

Three people were seriously injured when the bull wheels on a drifting oil well machine at the CT Smith farm two miles east of Mountville blew off around 4 30 in the morning. Driller Ernest Tedrow of Albany suffered head cuts and chest injuries. Grace Kehler of Toledo sustained leg ankle foot and hand injuries. Riley Morris had a head wound back injury and internal injuries. Injured were taken to local offices for treatment before being moved to their homes or local hotels. Cameron Interests of Charleston WV were drilling the well and planned to reach the sand soon.
President Hoover sailed aboard the Greenbrier down the Ohio Valley to Louisville to deliver the main address of a four day eastern central states trip. The voyage marks the nine foot channel completion between Pittsburgh and Cairo over 980 miles with federal spending over 126 million dollars and 53 dams and locks in operation.
About 250 attendees are expected after the banquet. The first general session will start at o o'clock at the Memorial Auditorium with Frank Appel, president of the Southeastern Teachers' Association, presiding.
Mrs. Ray Morrison of Pleasanton and her twin sister Mrs. Losa Weinbrenner of Gauley Bridge W Va pose with their children showing four sets of twins. The Morrison boys Hubert and Herbert 12 and Louis and Lois 15 months. Weinbrenner's twins Otis Logan and George Allen are six. Father Wilbur Rickson Huntington W Va and former husband of Mrs Morrison were twins themselves. The family notes heredity questions amid tragedy after Mr Weinbrenner was murdered.
High water on the Hocking River peaked at six and a half feet at 6:30 this morning. Mrs N. France of Mill View Place noted the gauge reading at East Bridge as waters that rose during the night began to recede today.
Carl H Beasley and H N Burgett will attend a Parkersburg meeting of the Ohio U 8S 50 Highway Association tied to the National Highway Association. The Parkersburg chamber and Automobile Club will host. The group aims to fix Federal Route 60 across the state and note prior improvements by the Ohio Highway Department.
Urban P F Diteman, a Montana rancher, departed Harbour Grace Newfoundland bound for London in a single engine monoplane The Golden Hind with 165 gallons of fuel and no radio. He had 25 hours of fuel and vanished by noon, with fears he may have crashed at sea off the Irish coast.
In Portland Oregon on October 22, Mrs Urban I Diteman Br expressed faith that her son Urban Jr. would succeed after his impromptu transatlantic flight. She said she was with him and his father voiced confidence, describing him as crazy but capable.
Alan T. Diteman Jr. plans a solo flight to London in a lightweight stock plane and 150 horsepower motor. Officials note the craft was not built for transatlantic journeys but previously covered 1650 miles from Brownsville to Winnipeg for a speed record.
MIDDLEPORT Oct 23 F F Wilson of Columbus is named trainmaster on the Southern Division of the New York Central Lines replacing W R Nutting who moves to Kenton in the same role. The transfer was made October 20 and the families will move later. Wilson will be here the last of the week.
