Teachers to Gather for 49th Southeastern Ohio Education Meet

Sunday October 22 1944 Sunday Messenger reports 11 county teachers to attend the 49th annual Southeastern Ohio Education Association session in Athens. Morning session at Ohio University Memorial Auditorium features Gladys Perrow Wehr and Dr. Channing Pollick. Luncheons and 14 sectional meetings follow with officers to be elected.

Honored PFC Socrates J Parkis Bronze Star Recipient

Private First Class Parkis 22 son of Mr and Mrs Jim Parkis 56 W Union St has earned the Bronze Star for meritorious conduct in France from July 13 to IS. He repeatedly made unescorted trips under heavy fire to keep his unit in communication. A Messenger for a Mantry battalion headquarters his courage and initiative reflect well on him and the armed forces. He is a Athens High graduate who attended Ohio University and has been in service for no years, arriving in England last February. The last family letter said he was in Holland.

Missing Sergeant Martin Reported In Action Over Holland

Sergeant Martin son of Mr and Mrs Roy Martin Lower Salem and grandson of Mr and Mrs James Featherston Stewart is missing in action over Holland since September He served as tail gunner on a B 26 Marauder with the 9th Air Force He flew about 60 missions and hoped to be sent home He has Air Medal Silver and Bronze Stars and entered the Air Forces February 9 1943 He received wings at Kingman Arizona in November He went overseas February His wife and infant son live in Zanesville He has six siblings and one brother serves at Camp Haan California and another brother Corporal Earl Martin is at Zanesville or nearby locations

Red Cross Seeks Funds For Military Kit Bags

Athens county Chapter of the American Red Cross plans 432 kit bags for armed forces members overseas. Each bag costs $1 in donations to buy contents. Navy 44 bags and Army 288 bags are planned, with Ohio University Red Cross College Unit funding 0 Navy and 100 Army bags. Bags include soap, cigars or gum, playing cards, writing supplies, a small fiction book, and sewing items.

Scouts Bake Cookies for Thursday Party at Troop Five

Girl Scouts of Troop Two, sixth graders, baked janut butter cookies Saturday morning in the scout kitchen for a Thursday 3 30 p m party for Troop Five fifth graders. Named bakers include Evelyn White and others. Martha Smith of Ohio University supervised the baking. A new scout newspaper Trefoil is being started by Troop Six with monthly changes to give each girl a chance to write.

Two Husbands Accused of Assault and Battery

Two men were arraigned on assault and battery charges in Mayor Franz Woodworths court Friday evening. Robert W. Miller 90 of Athens Route 3 pleaded guilty to a charge filed by his wife Mary Miller and was fined five dollars and costs. The other husband, named Fri, pleaded not guilty to a charge filed by his wife Emma He was released under two hundred dollars bond and sheriff Bateman had him arrested Thursday.

Seeking Aid for Family Whose Home Burned

The Athene Red Cross asks for aid for a family whose home recently burned. Needed items include cooking utensils, dishes, bedding, clothing for a 16 year old girl who wears size 20, and general supplies. Contributions may be taken to the Red Cross office on E State Street or arranged by phone for pickup.

Boyd Allen Jr Receives West Point Appointment

Boyd Allen Jr of The Plains has received an appointment to West Point Military Academy in a letter from Congressman Thomas A Jenkins. Allen, a 1942 Plains High School honors graduate, was active in sports music and dramatics and is currently in service at Newberry College, South Carolina.
