Death toll hits Athens area families with multiple obituaries
John Brown dies at Kenton after neuralgic illness worsened by exposure while overseeing a mine shaft. Abram Lash of Alexanders Township dies after age related diseases. Richard Bishop, 25, dies after being struck by a freight train near Marietta while at Athens State Hospital. Isaac Chappelear, 49, dies of typhoid fever at his home, with four brothers and a sister among the mourners. Funeral services held in Presbyterians and local churches with interments in Bishopville and Bassett cemeteries.

Contractor George W. Towsley Dies at 33 in Athens
George W. Towsley aged 33 a prominent Athens contractor died suddenly Friday morning at the corner of State and Morris avenues while supervising a new residence. He collapsed and died instantly. The body was prepared for burial at W A Hibard’s undertaking and later moved to the home of Mr and Mrs J P Wooden University Terrace for funeral services led by Dr G Walton King of the Presbyterian church. Burial was in the new cemetery. He leaves a wife and one daughter Mrs A C Graham of Gloster who were visiting at the time. Born in Marietta in 1860 he enlisted as a drummer boy in the 6th U S regiment at seven. He had built many private and public buildings in the area.

Funeral services for Mrs. Robert W. Jones were held Friday at the home of her daughter Mrs. A J Frame where she lived for years. Dr R F Bisher conducted the services with many friends present. Interment was in the new cemetery. She was wife of the late Colonel Robert W. Jones and mother of Will 3. Jones, former Athens Journal editor, with relatives from Columbus Gloucester and Fairmont West Virginia in attendance.

A historic early 20th century notice debunks circulars claiming United Mine Workers endorsement of Hugh Gormley for state senator. The document, from Local No 203 and Athens County miners, states no such meeting occurred in Glouster Ohio or Sunday Creek valley and asserts signatories had no authority to endorse him. The submittal lists numerous miners including Charles Allerman, Joseph Adams, Henry Adams, Andrew Johnson, Fred A Ellison, Dan Thompson, Lawrence Hyde, and Leo Davis among others.

Powder Explosion Kills Snedden at Luhrig Mine
Aged 22 and a miner named Snedden died from severe burns after a spark from a lamp ignited a cartridge during shot preparation at the Luhrig mine. His partner James Penrod was badly burned. Snedden died Sunday after the October 7 accident. Funeral services were held Monday at Union Cemetery. The Luling mines closed for the funeral. He leaves a wife and child.

Blackwood McKown Nuptials in Lancaster Home
Miss Fannie McKown and Mr. John P. Blackwood wed last evening at the bride’s Lancaster home in a private ceremony attended by relatives. The groom, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Blackwood, has worked with Hocking Valley in Lancaster. They plan to reside in Athens, where he has been named an agent succeeding his father.
