All eleven prospective local inductees who reported to Marietta on October 7 failed the physical exams, according to draft board officials. Most were 23 and 24 years old, with unclear reasons. some may have been previously rejected. Districts may supply the five men needed from Athens County for November.
The Athens Board of Trade voted to publicize a two mill city street improvement levy on the ballot in 13 days. A committee will handle advertising and outreach. The group also endorsed a two mill school levy and discussed Route 50 relocation, local property issues, and a forthcoming nominating committee.
Howard Gleisner of Oberlin Ohio praises his new Ford BIG JOB F-7 truck claiming superior comfort economy and performance after ten years of trial with various makes. He notes a 145 horsepower engine and urges others to test Ford innovation including Gyro Grip clutch Level Action suspension demountable brake drums and engine choices.

Thomas E Dewey led a campus mock election at Ohio University beating Henry Wallace and the Progressive Party into second place. Dewey received 289 votes while Wallace had 136 and Truman 103 with the Democrats at 93. The Leftist Socialist and Progressive share reached 37 percent, totaling 46.5 percent for the winning candidate.
Amesville announces the junior class carnival at Ames-Bern High School on October 28. The event features a musical program directed by Mrs. Gregory and the crowning of the Carnival king and queen by Mrs. Starlin. Class officers include Harold Sayre president, Jack Armstrong vice president, Ardeth Boudinot secretary, and Nila Ruth Stobart treasurer.
Athens County commissioners approved buying a truck with a US 25 hoist dump bed from Athens Truck and Implement Co for 5856.20 dollars and authorized selling two older county trucks. Bills totaled 2093.41 dollars, largely for the relief fund’s medical bills, with other payments for the general fund, bail damage overpayment, fee inspection, dog and kennel claims, and Children’s Home expenses.
The Messenger reports a correction to Rosser Bateman’s garbage disposal offer. He states residential charges are $1.40 per month and business rates average $8 per month, varying with service level.

Mrs Dale Warner of Downington delivered a second set of triplets within a month at Sheltering Arms Hospital. The three newborn boys arrived in quick succession with weights 3 7 4 7 and 3 12, all reported healthy though in incubators.
Mercury rose with a low of 29 degrees and a high of 59 as warmer conditions continue. At 10 am today the thermometer stood at 41 degrees with another heavy frost evident overnight per weather observer Mrs. C. N. France.
Mr and Mrs Irvin D Quick mourn the death of Mrs Helen Acomb in Christ s Hospital Cincinnati. Funeral services set for Thursday at 2 30 p m at Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church in Cincinnati.
Arthur Cornwell of Ohio University was named temporary head of the Athens Rent Advisory Board. Other members include H. H. Townsend Rev. Sydney J. Browne Edward Cole and Ernest McGraner. The board, appointed by Housing Expeditor Tighe Woods, will advise on rent control changes and case handling as area shifts occur.
Trustees for K. T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion will be elected at the regular meeting tonight at 8 p.m. at the Legion home. Commander Sam Alvarez announced lunch will follow the session.
