Kennedy argued the United States faced eroding power and urged building military strength to meet commitments and deter war. The candidates spoke separately to about 10,000 Legion members and locals.
In Syracuse Henry Cabot Lodge told state dairy leaders his door would be open if the Republican ticket wins. He said he would devote time and rely on Congress and the presidency to help dairy interests. Allan Ostrander of Theresa noted dairy leaders would seek to present New York views to Nixon if he is elected.
The Soviet Union warned it would boycott the UN disarmament debate if Western backed arms reduction plans proceed. Valerian A. Zorin called Western proposals a waste of time and blamed the West for the deadlock, tying disarmament to reforms at the UN and a three man secretariat board. At the intersection of Culver and Hunter streets a school bus and an automobile collide. Jennifer Vollmer, seven, Gore, received a head cut and shock. Willard J. Voters in Oxford, home of Miami University, approved a new village charter in a special election Tuesday. The measure creates a seven-member council and a village manager, and shifts the government to a mayor council system in November 1961. The vote was 678 to 173.
The Rev. Thomas J. Tracy aged 49 known as Padre of the Foxholes of Guadalcanal died Tuesday in St. Paul Minnesota. The clergyman served with troops in the Pacific theater and was honored for chaplaincy during wartime service. The obituary notes his years of ministry and his dedication to soldiers.
