Carpenter Is Rewarded For Idea At Air Field
An ideator victory submitted by a former Athens man, now in Topeka Army Air Field, earned a cash award for developing a portable dimpling machine to create uniform dimples on skin patches. George Carpenter, assistant foreman sheet metal worker, previously lived on Athens Route 5 and worked for Holland Furnace Co. He and his family reside in Topeka, Kansas. Three men were fined five dollars each by Mayor Franz Woodworth for intoxication. They were Walter Stephenson, 18, of Sunny Side Drive. Charles Rider, 31, of Richland Ave. and Emmett Taylor, 20, of Riverside Drive.

Wildes Retires After Almost 50 Years in Railroading
William D. Wildes, longtime chief car inspector for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in Athens, retires after about five decades in rail service. Born in Snowfork, he began on a section crew at 16, worked on the Hocking Valley Railroad in 1901, and joined the Athens yards in 1908, serving until retirement.

Wife of Civil War Veteran Dies Here at 91
Mrs. Susan Hooper, widow of Civil War veteran William L Hooper, died Wednesday night at 81 E Mulberry St after three weeks of illness. Born in Belmont County she spent most of her life here, with 22 years in Columbus. She was a Methodist and GAR Auxiliary member, survived by two daughters, two sons, eight grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.
