Plane crash kills former education official and eight others

A Scenic Air Ways Cessna 402 crashed into a tree studded snow covered area at Pine Mountain about 40 miles north of the community and 60 miles east of the Arizona Nevada border. There were nine passengers including Mr and Mrs Allen and five foreigners. Pilot Wayne Leeth 47 from Las Vegas had flown Grand Canyon trips for years. Nine victims identified later with remaining names withheld pending notification of relatives. Allen 60 was a former education commissioner appointed by President Nixon in 1969 and fired in 1970 after criticizing desegregation and Vietnam policies.
