Athens City Council approves new electric rate contract

The Athens City Council approved a ten-year electric rate contract with the Columbus and Southern Ohio Electric Co. The plan sets residential rates at 1 for the first 20 KWH, 4.5 for the next 40, 3.3 for the next 70, and 2 for over 130 KWH per month with a $1 minimum. Commercial rates remain unchanged. The ordinance also allows adjustments for cost changes, including discounts for decreases and surcharges for increases. Electric official Fred M. McKay noted the average bill would fall under the new schedule.

Paper Out Early Reminder From Athens High

Mr and Mrs Athens a reminder that the Athens High School Junior Army will canvass every home tomorrow morning to collect papers. Residents are urged to separate newsprint cardboard brown paper and magazines and tie into bundles for easy handling. Bundles should be placed where visible as 220 to 240 students will gather 12 to 15 tons in a few hours. If papers are not collected by noon call 595. If rain delays, collection will move to next week. Get your paper out early.

4000 in Fall Winter Phone Books Directory Size Grows

The Athens Home Telephone Co has distributed fall and winter 1944 45 directories. More than 4000 subscribers are listed with seven pages for Athens and Chauncey growth since moving into a new building 16 years ago. No rate increases have occurred in that period.

James Hanson Fatally Hurt Near Cambridge

Davis Ohio reports the death of James Carlos Hanson aged 28 after a collision with a railroad locomotive while seated on a track near Cambridge. He worked for B and O Railroad as a flagman and is survived by his wife Fay and two children James and Beverly, with his parents Homer and Mrs Hanson and a brother John in the Army. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at the Shawnee Methodist Church.

More than 70 Athens notaries wives and guests heard Mack Sauer former Messenger Watch Dog now a nationally known author and lecturer in a Ladles Night event at Athens Country Club. He spoke about Bunker Hit using charts with humor and philosophy during a half hour talk. Jane Coldren and Lieut. Joe Thackery sang solos. Thackery is Army on furlough from New Orleans. Social hour followed the dinner on the veranda amid autumn foliage.

Ladd Orchard Places In Ohio Fruit Contest

Ladd Orchard in Athens route 4 earned third place in a state wide evaluation of 86 Ohio orchards conducted by Ohio State University disease and insect specialists. Owner Kaloa Ladd and sister Grace Warren describe eight sprayings from early April to mid July for Rome Beauties and other varieties. Kampf from another Athens County man scored 97 94 perfect fruit, while Williams and Hamilton County orchards took first and second respectively.

Warning Issued Over Halloween Pranks by Police Chief Grogan

Police Chief J B Grogan warned Halloween revelers that pranks are going too far. He cited stolen advertising signs from a filling station and said those responsible were ordered to restore property. He urged prudent driving and announced prosecutions for any property damage.

Camera Club To Meet In Amesville Tonight

The Amesville area reports a camera club meeting set for this evening at 7. The event occurs alongside multiple police and court notes including William H.
