Bella Run Fun Show rescues horses from Ohio slaughter
Bella Run Equine owners Richel and Zack Bendler run a rescue as opponents of the 2007 federal ban on horse slaughter note a loophole. They attend Friday auctions in Ohio to bid against kill buyers, rehabbing horses before transport to Canada or Mexico for slaughter avoided. Their nonprofit began in May 2015.

Addiction disease or choice how drugs take over
Officials and recovering addicts describe addiction as a brain disease, not a moral failing. Physicians note addiction alters brain chemistry, erasing control once dependence sets in, with Vivitrol used in Athens County recovery programs. Data show heroin poisoning deaths rising sharply, about 10,500 annually, driven by overdose risks and genetic factors.

Women shaped historic Ohio farm rooted in 19th century deeds
Seven Athens and Washington county farms join the Ohio Historic Family Farms Program as century‑old operations. The Cline family farm on Factory Road in Albany highlights a 300 crossbred ewe and 400 lamb sheep operation dating to 1879, with Kay Cline cited as the key archival organizer. The farms span sheep, tree farming and strawberry cultivation, tracing roots to Abraham Fought and Civil War era deeds, while corn and oats rotations support the enterprise. See more on page A6.
