Britain faces a nationwide coal strike as more than a million miners and auxiliary workers walk out. Government blames the miners while rail transport and iron and steel plants prepare for disruption. Shipping and fuel supply plans are adjusted amid a looming energy crisis.
Five meetings were held in Athens County Friday evening as seven clubs formed and national issues were discussed. The Frost gathering organized a Harding-Coolidge club with Theodore Rowell as president and Mrs Hatch addressing women voters.
London report from October 16 notes Sir George Patsh addressing the National Economic council. He says President Wilson traveled to Europe seeking debt forgiveness for Entente nations but returned with no such concession, claiming Europe was not ready for his envisioned world.

Paving a two thirds mile stretch north of Nelsonville will start Monday under contractor Fred Beckler who has set up camp and moved machinery. The project is state funded. if the remaining quarter mile inside Nelsonville is improved, local officials must agree without state aid. County lines between Athens and Perry counties will be connected to create a straight link from Corning to Athens.
Chicago October 16 police arrested Joseph Sulder described as distributor for a million dollar bootlegging operation. Authorities seized one hundred cases of liquor and found papers they say will lead to wholesale arrests. Two raids on other alleged bootleggers followed.
Chicago October 16. Reduction of salaries for 450 post office department employees has begun due to declines in living costs. Postmaster Carlisle received a letter from Postmaster Burleson ordering cuts for clerks and bookkeepers earning between 2000 and 3000 dollars annually.
Captain and Mrs Louis R De Steiguer arrive in Athens to visit sister Mrs Jena DeS Slattery. He has been detached from the U S S Arkansas and heads to Portsmouth New Hampshire as commandant of the Portsmouth navy yards. The Arkansas recently returned from Pacific waters near Honolulu.
Washington reports fall in prices across the economy led by farmers selling products. Farm prices fell 15.6 percent in September with White potatoes 1.35 a bushel and butter 64.1 cents per pound. Officials anticipate a broader drop in living costs toward prewar levels as the dollar gains purchasing power.
Commodities in Chicago fell across essentials for eating and bags as merchants report widespread declines. Butter and eggs dropped, potatoes fell sharply, sugar slipped to new lows, coal costs eased, clothing and planes saw steep cuts, with grocers predicting further price drops as the food market adjusts after the war. Coffee also declined in some cases, while sugar held near recent lows.
In Cleveland on October 16, merchants report some price cuts across foods and coal and flour. Businessmen say a true relief awaits only if wage levels drop from the current high. Restaurant foods have fallen 10 to 15 percent as soft coal and flour also show wholesale and retail declines.
In Manhattan on Oct 16 price recessions continued as experts cited weekly reviews. Bradstreet reported a 10.16 percent drop in the weekly food index while Dun’s review showed 55 decliners and 22 advancers. Noted declines occurred in textiles hides and leather with textile failures observed. A 15 cent per yard cut was announced for common bleached muslin.
Clothing sellers in Kansas City cut prices 20 percent at Wolf Brothers and general reductions range from 20 to 6 percent. Lower wholesale costs are cited as the reason, with Sugar priced down to 12 cents.
Detroit merchants report cloth ing and automobile prices easing but food prices, except sugar, remain steady with sugar dropping 50 percent in recent weeks.
Magistrate Harris sent Hannah Kahn 16 to one day in the wards for truancy. Hannah said she was seeking help and faced a difficult school day.
Athens and nearby communities face coal shortages as railroad shipping disruptions hinder supply. The Athens Chamber of Commerce and Federated Board of Trade secured pledges from federal and railroad officials for increased coal cars, with 300 cars allocated to the Hocking and Sunday Creek valleys if used promptly. An Interstate Commerce Commission order reduced car shortage, and a meeting October 18 will decide if mines in the two valleys can meet demand and operate at full capacity.
Rexall straw poll conducted at Conners Drug Store on Court Street shows Harding leading Cox in West Virginia. The nation wide results place Harding at 444,664 to Cox 291,882 with 353 electoral votes possible. women favor Harding while men favor the Republican nominee.
Washington reports the weekly forecast for October 18 to 23 calls for rain Tuesday and Wednesday in the Ohio Valley followed by generally fair and much cooler weather with likely frost and freezing temperatures.
Internal Revenue Bureau ruling allows each family to make up to 200 gallons of non intoxicating cider or fruit juice with 0.5 percent or more alcohol for home use without tax. Fermented juice above this limit is taxed. excess amounts carry double the ordinary tax and bond may be required.
Burg Johnson was divorced from Bessie Johnson in common pleas court and ordered to pay alimony and child support totaling 15 monthly plus $150 for property claims. Other cases were dismissed or settled, including Anna Lasure vs Henry Lasure and Hesier Packing Co. vs Athens Junk Co.

Four bandits pursued Sheriff Ben Morris and deputies after a daytime robbery in Youngstown. A chase ended when ammunition ran low. Morris’s car was struck by bullets though the bandits’ vehicle fled.
Most courthouse offices will close all day Wednesday October 2020 to allow staff to attend the hearing with Senator Harding in Jackson Ohio.
In Newark on October 16 thieves broke into two Streicher safes and took valuables including diamonds jewelry and refined gold totaling about 100000. Police urged witnesses to come forward as investigators traced the crime to an organized burglary ring.
Senator Warren G Harding on the final leg of his speaking tour urged formation of a league to reknit international relations. He spoke in Green Castle Indiana and noted France and Germany seek U.S. leadership, while distancing from state department policy.
Clarence Cox pleaded guilty to a Friday charge in Wig's Court. He was sentenced to 60 days at a Columbus workhouse. The case stemmed from a quarrel involving the family. A constable reported the incident at Circle Hi, with incurred costs and a fine.
