Gary Indiana squads, under army intelligence, raided forty homes as part of a national cleanup of alleged red agitators. Seventy names on a secret list were being investigated, with 18 detainees held and more arrests expected after the May Day bomb plot probe.
Washington Oct 16 President Samuel Gompers of the American Federation of Labor is seriously ill at his home and will miss sessions of the national industrial conference today. The announcement came from members of the labor group he has led since the conference began.
Washington Oct 15 The President is in touch with the national industrial conference proceedings and will act to prevent any move that could break up the gathering. He will insist the conference accomplish some of its declared purposes.
The statement notes Mr. Gompers returned home exhausted and went to bed. Dr. Henry Parker attended him, finding nervous exhaustion and a temperature of 101, recommending bed rest. Gompers later followed a speech urging adoption of the resolution to mediate the steel strike.
A Pittsburgh jury discharged Mrs. Sadie Mallreer after evidence showed a window breakage did not prove intent, concluding the case hinged on proof of aim and action.

Two bandits used an acetylene torch to force open the vault at the Potosi National Bank in Potosi Missouri. They fled with about $25,000 after the early morning break in. Authorities pursue leads as investigation continues.
In Murrayville Illinois a cow shed 300 pounds over fourteen days while traversing a straw stack with no water. The stack collapsed behind it and the animal crawled out. An inventor patents a rubber stamp device to apply ads on roads by drawing paint from a tank on a car tire.

Five Akron men were arrested two hours after they robbed a man near Rittman Ohio. The group led police to recover $1,000 stolen money from a belt. Suspects named Alex Lucas John Krynski Andrew Duyryhyd Thomas Delinsky and Tony Irovay confessed.

The body of Wesley Selich, a boy of about seven, was found on the lawn of George Green seven miles south of Steubenville Ohio. He was shot around nine o clock during an apple gathering raid by Green and several companions. The body lay undiscovered until today as friends were unaware of the shooting. Tension rises in the area and no arrests have been made.
Chicago October 14. An effort to gauge how seriously army officers of the central department view news censorship in Gary was to be made today. The Gary reporting team appeared before Colonel W. Mapes to explain why the Gimbel bombing story had been printed. Army officials said the reporter's appearance before the commander was not compulsory.
