Two Federal Prison Escapees Captured Near Salem

Two of the Marion Federal Penitentiary escapees were captured miles from the prison after a car crash chase. Edward Roche and Maurice J. Philion were arrested within an hour of each other and returned to custody. The remaining two, Dennis Hunter and Henry Gargano, were still at large as officers widened the search with tracing dogs and local reports of water needs.

State Controlling Board considers $2.1 million request

Columbus State officials say the State Controlling Board planned a morning meeting to review a Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation request for 2.1 million mae cy funds to preserve jobs at state mental institutions. No meeting details were available at press time.

Nighttime protest near high school in Louisville leads to arrests

In Louisville Kentucky several wild shots were fired toward Jefferson County police during an anti desegregation busing demonstration near a high school. Seven people were arrested in connection with the disturbance. No injuries were reported. The police could not estimate participant numbers.

FBI agents probe four dynamite blasts on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation causing about 45000 in damage. No injuries reported. Buildings housing Bureau of Indian Affairs offices took the worst hit with headquarters damage estimated at 20000.

Beame forecasts smaller NYC deficit after revised estimate

Mayor Abraham Beame says New York City's three year operating deficit may have been overstated by as much as 200 million dollars. He will present the optimistic revised figure to the Emergency Financial Control Board on Wednesday as the deadline to propose 200 million in budget cuts approaches. Beame said he has detailed plans for about 50 million in mandated economies.

Wallace May Consider Independent White House Run

Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace began a two week European tour. He said he does not rule out an independent bid next year if he fails to win the Democratic nomination but is not thinking along that route at present. His aide told the Democratic committee he would back the ticket if it reflects the average American.

California parents dispute respirator death after medical error

The Uribes say they did not consent to unhooking the respirator that kept their 19 year old son Sammy alive for 18 days following brain death caused during surgery. A hospital report says an anesthetist placed an oxygen tube in the esophagus, cutting brain oxygen for about five minutes and contributing to death. The nurse or surgeon in charge fired for the error, while the hospital claims consent was given.

Machines Are Made by Man and Not God in Death Case

In Wellington Ohio funeral services for 17 year old Randal Carmen avoided the brain death debate. The Rev Howard Partom said life-saving machines are useful only when brain activity remains. Carmen died after 21 days on life support as his parents fought to unplug him.
