Ohio University launches an aviation initiative led by 34 year old David Vaughan, aiming to establish an air college. Next term, offerings include a three hour flying course, one hour ground school and a two hour flying orientation class, with flying graduates eligible for a private license.
The university develops a multi city branch aviation operation linking six Ohio sites to the main campus. Dean Albert C Gubitz maintains real time contact with branches as the program grows under Vaughan’s outlook. The aviation nucleus centers on the Ohio University airport featuring a 3200 foot runway and 600 by 106 access ramps. Personnel include Rolland Ismert Homer Byrd and Richard Robe.

Congo army withdraws four day blockade of Patrice Lumumba's residence in Leopoldville. Mobutu, celebrating his 30th birthday, said soldiers would arrest Lumumba if he left. No immediate reason given for the move. Mobutu indicated no intention to clash with the United Nations over Lumumba's fate.

Kennedy condemned any connection to the Klan and Nixon welcomed joint repudiation.
