Public backs Goodell Vietnam pullout poll 57 percent

GEORGE GALLUP PRINCETON N J Americans surveyed favor Congress passing Sen Charles Goodell proposed bill to withdraw all U S troops from Vietnam by end of 1970 and leave fighting to South Vietnam with U S military aid. results show 57 percent support passage while 43 percent oppose or undecided. Democrats favor passage 72 percent vs Republicans 52 percent.

Soviets Launch Soyuz 6 Spacecraft With Two-Man Crews

The Soviet Union launched the Soyuz 6 mission into Earth orbit with two cosmonauts aboard and planned two additional launches over the weekend. Tass reported the ship was orbiting normally and that welding experiments could indicate a broader plan to form a permanent space platform for extended Earth-orbit research.

Astronauts Plan Special Moon Mission Walk to Retrieve Surveyor Parts

Apollo 12 crew members Charles Conrad Alan Bean and Richard Gordon prepared for a Nov 14 launch from Cape Kennedy on a mission to land in the Ocean of Storms about 200 miles from the Apollo 11 site. Gordon will orbit 65 miles above while Conrad and Bean descend to retrieve parts from a Surveyor craft and test precision landing techniques.

U S Stands Against China in UN Vote Drive

The United States reiterated opposition to admitting Communist China to the United Nations and pressed for a two thirds vote in the General Assembly. Diplomatic sources said seven countries had agreed to sponsor the resolution. In Columbus Ohio a judge ordered a re sentencing for Richard Tingler who faces execution for four murders. Tingler, 28, was to be executed Jan 28 but a procedural error requires re hearing. Also in Saigon Viet Cong cadre and 45 children surrendered to U S troops at a base northeast of the city, ending their resistance.
