Parking Lot Proposal Not Favored By City
City officials say purchasing the Bank of Athens site for a parking lot is financially unfeasible under the current offer. The bank proposes a $100,000 sale with a bank loan at five percent and one half hour free parking for customers, but the two third size lot cannot generate enough revenue to cover obligations. A follow up meeting with bank president Charles Kirkwood may set a new median point, and the plan is described as not dead. Later, a police officer returned a silver abacus to 7th grader Nancy Mason after her feature in The Messenger. Nancy baked cookies for the officer in thanks. Also noted, Kermit Gilkey and Mary Gates, both 18, were mentioned in relation to a court case.
