The Air Force aims to launch an unmanned lunar probe from Cape Canaveral on Columbus Day weekend. The 85 pound payload includes a TV scanner and instruments to study meteorites and any magnetic field. Success depends on 300000 precision parts and a 24000 mph escape velocity.
The Air Force aims to arm supersonic bombers with a new air to surface missile named White Lance. Manufactured by Martin in Orlando it is reportedly nuclear tipped and an improved Bullpup variant designed to strike grounded aircraft, ships, bridges and ground targets with greater accuracy than rockets like the Sidewinder.
Alabama moves to form a private corporation to run segregated schools if public schools close due to integration threats. State School Superintendent Meadows warns against upheaval while MacDonald Gallion, Montgomery attorney and Democratic candidate for attorney general, announces the plan. Meadows questions feasibility of staff and facilities if public schools cannot be built.

Union leader E L Wheatley ordered members back to work, while the company argues seniority and vacation rights depend on management discretion.

Company and United Rubber Workers representatives will meet Monday to discuss a dispute that idled 2000 workers at General Tire & Rubber Co. The walkout, the first major strike at the plant in 12 years, began after suspensions in the truck tire division. Workers returned Thursday night, 24 hours after the strike started.
