Support for Two Mill Levy Urged by Athens Schools Official
Athens public schools need a two mill operating levy this fall to avoid retrenchment in salaries and services. Superintendent Harper C. Pendry told Kiwanis members that the additional mills keep tax rates the same as last year and would raise per pupil spending from 125.99 to 144, with Ohio districts averaging 142. Pendry warned low funding risks teachers departing for other fields as Athens schools dip into capital reserves. Guests included M. A. Garner, Earl F. Matthews, Robert B. Kerr, and Earl Washburn.

No More Change to Gas Heat
F. W. Phillips of The Ohio Fuel Gas Company urged no further switch to gas heat this season due to shortages. He said orders and materials are scarce, delaying a $25 million program to expand gas supply. Projects like a new compressor station and a major trunk line can only be partly completed this winter. Some areas face low pressures and possible curtailment of gas use in manufacturing during severe weather. The company will continue to serve permanent new construction while conserving resources.
