Athens County Fall Farm Outlook Positive Amid Mixed Yields

Athens County extension agent Kenneth Ackerman says the fall farm outlook is generally good with prices for eggs peaches strawberries apples and beef cattle slightly above 1964 levels. He notes higher hog and lamb prices and improved fall pastures aiding hay supplies despite alfalfa leaf weevil infestations and cereal leaf weevil quarantines in nearby regions. Dry periods boosted wheat and barley while late corn stands show potential for a good harvest. Some tobacco growers report moisture rotting, and 17 year locusts damaged fruit stands. Fall seeding of grasses and small grains looks promising.
