Guidance on planting trees emphasizes pressing the root ball into soil, then mounding eight to ten inches for stability due to underlying moisture. After placement, tread firm, mulch, and in spring remove the mound but keep mulch to protect the tree and ensure durable growth.
A farmer describes trials mixing chopped straw or hay with corn meal and bran to feed two working horses. He weighs and measures results showing that 200 pounds weekly of the mixture plus cut feed keeps the horses in top condition at under two thirds the cost of uncut hay and whole grain. He notes corn meal needs bran dilution and that ground oats makes excellent meal. Fodder is cut by horsepower on bad days and stored for surplus.
