A lengthy Garfield speech urges young men to join the liberty camp, condemning the Democratic past and cautioning against Dead issues like squatter sovereignty and slavery. It extols Republican gains and urges voting next Tuesday to honor Garfield’s memory.
The piece argues Bookwalter cannot win by mere show and criticizes the Democratic campaign leadership. It claims the young organizers have alienated old-guard leaders, risking a split that could cost votes in the forthcoming Democratic election.
