The US Command declared the F111 fighter-bombers fit after six days of tests and sent them on missions over North Vietnam. Two strikes were flown overnight as about 50 planes arrived at Takhli air base in Thailand.
Washington AP reports the Senate edges toward final approval of a sprawling Social Security Welfare bill after shelving decisive welfare reform. The chamber votes to test three reform plans, dealers out workfare, and backs day care, work bonuses, wage subsidies, and child support efforts pending House action.
Congress easily overrode the President's veto to grant a 20 percent pension hike for 900,000 retired railroad workers. The House vote was 353 to 29 and the Senate 78 to 5, meeting the two thirds requirement. The bill becomes law despite Nixon's warning of potential railroad retirement system bankruptcy.
The Senate votes a third time on ending a filibuster threatening a consumer protection agency bill. Senators Javits and Percy urged the White House to drop support for the filibuster or allow changes the administration would consider.

Cancer scientists from 10 nations convene in Bethesda to review BCG as a possible cancer treatment. The National Cancer Institute notes encouraging results yet no proven success and cautions that BCG requires controlled human trials. A recent Oak Ridge study claimed animal cures but was not duplicated in humans.
